A/N: I've added Beckett/Cadman to the ship pairings.
The next day Elizabeth managed to make an appearance in the control room and spent some time in her office. Everywhere she looked she saw sympathetic eyes looking at her. She had spoken briefly to Major Lorne asking him to pick up the slack for a few days. No one had heard from John yet.
They were going to have a memorial service for Rodney the next day already having had one for Ronon and Teyla on the main land two days after the return from the tragic mission. Rodney’s remains would be taken back to Earth and his sister Jeannie would need to be told.
Later Elizabeth found herself wandering the less crowded halls of Atlantis. All the sympathetic eyes around the control room were starting to get to her.
She came to an opened door and heard a voice. It sounded frustrated. She realized the voice wasn’t speaking English and it took her a moment to sort out what language she was hearing.
As she turned inside she saw Radek standing at his work bench looking at a computer and swearing every so often.
“Radek?”
The scientist jumped up from where he was hunched and turned with a jerk. “Elizabeth,” he ran a hand through his messy hair. “How are you?”
Elizabeth gave him a sad smile. “I’m hanging in there. How are you?”
Radek sighed. “I am not so sure I would like Rodney’s job. He is…” he grimaced, “was better at it than I.”
“You two worked well together,” Elizabeth said.
Radek smiled. “As difficult as he was, I will miss working with him.”
Elizabeth sat next to Radek. She reached out and squeezed his hand.

Carson stood before a cabinet in the infirmary. He had been keeping himself busy with stocking supplies letting his staff take care of any medical issues that may come up for the day.
“Carson?”
The doctor turned a little startled. A smile spread across his face. “How was your mission, love?”
Laura Cadman gave a slight shrug before opening her arms and wrapping them around Carson’s shoulders.
Carson released a shaking breath as he wrapped his arms around her. “I’m glad you’re back.”

It was late when John stepped out of his quarters. He looked around the halls before continuing. He didn’t want to see anyone and if he did walk by someone he hoped they’d just leave him alone.
He walked with a steady quick pace until he made it to the mess hall. It was empty and the light was dim. He breathed out when he didn’t see anyone. Finding a packaged sandwich and something to drink he sat at a table.
“John?”
He sighed and looked up a few minutes later when Elizabeth said his name. “Um, hi. Sorry I disappeared on you today.”
Elizabeth sat down across from him. “It’s all right. I came out as long as I could.”
They were both silent for several moments. John was picking at his sandwich instead of eating it. Elizabeth stared into her cup of coffee.
At last Elizabeth looked up at John. “Someone needs to see Jeannie and tell her.”
John put down his sandwich and looked at her. They could see the dark circles under each other’s eyes. “I’ll go,” he said. “He was my teammate.” He swallowed and looked back down at his sandwich feeling his stomach roll.
“I’ll go with you,” Elizabeth said.
John’s head came up to look at her.
“I’m sure Lorne can hold down the fort for a few weeks,” she said.
John just nodded feeling his stomach settle a fraction. Looking at his sandwich, it wasn’t quite enough for him to eat and be confident he would keep it down.
“I should get some sleep,” Elizabeth said. “We’ll have the memorial in the morning and then we can leave for Earth.”
“Yeah,” John stood up the same time as her.
They walked to the door together brushing shoulders. John dumped his sandwich on the way out.
From the direction they were walking they came to Elizabeth’s quarters first. She looked up at John when they stopped at the door. “Goodnight John.”
“Night Lizabeth,” he looked at her for a moment before giving her a brief smile that didn’t reach his eyes and turned leaving her.
