“Colonel Sheppard!”
John turned to see Radek trying to catch up to him. “What can I do for you, Radek?”
“I heard you are putting together a new team,” he said when he came up next to John.
“Yeah,” he looked at the scientist suspiciously.
“I have someone I think you should consider.”
“You’re not thinking of volunteering are you?”
Radek’s eyes widened and he shook his head. “No, no, no,” he said. “A new scientist arrived a few days ago. An astrophysicist.”
John just managed to hold back a grimace. He knew this wasn’t going to be easy.
“You can find him in the gym.”
That had John’s attention. “What, he get lost?”
“He used to be in the Marine Reserves,” Radek said. “He’s trained in weapons and he’s fit.”
“Is he smart?”
“Extremely,” Radek handed John a file.
“Dr. Jason O’Malley, age thirty-three,” John read. “All right, I’ll go meet him.”
SB
John was headed toward the gym when Elizabeth contacted him over the radio.
“Where are you?” She asked.
“On my way to the gym to meet someone.”
“Should I be jealous?” John could hear the smile in her voice.
“I’m pretty sure he’s not my type,” he heard Elizabeth laugh. “There’s a new scientist Radek wants me to meet.”
“Dr. Jason O’Malley?” Elizabeth asked.
“Yep, have you met him?”
“Briefly,” she said.
“What did you think?” He asked.
“Enthusiastic, but well disciplined.”
“Sounds promising,” he said. “So was there another reason you called other than to find out where I was?” He grinned.
“Actually I wanted to let you know Carson and Laura invited us over to their quarters for dinner.”
“Think they’re finally engaged?” John asked.
“I wouldn’t be surprised.”
John was just about to the door of the gym. “Gotta go.”
“I hope this one works out,” Elizabeth said.
“Me too,” John replied.
SB
John entered the gym feeling a little twist in his gut. He hadn’t been in here much in the last four months. Looking across the room he was surprised to see Jinto sparing with another man. He recognized the man from his file Radek had handed him only a few minutes earlier.
The two were using the banto sticks John was quite familiar with. He shook his head remembering the many times he was knocked on his butt by Teyla. “You have not been practicing,” her admonishment echoed in his mind. No, he hadn’t been practicing and if she were there she would knock him on his ass in one swift move.
“Colonel Sheppard,” he was brought back to the present by Jinto’s excited voice. John still couldn’t believe how much the boy had grown since they had met over four years ago. He was sixteen now and almost as tall as John.
“Jinto, I see you’ve made a new friend,” John smiled.
“So you’re the famous Colonel Sheppard Jinto has been telling me about,” Dr. O’Malley offered his hand and John shook it. O’Malley had a lean muscular build. His hair was a dark blond cropped cut and he had a young face that didn’t quite match his age.
“Or infamous depending who you ask,” John smirked.
“I have to go meet my father,” Jinto said before excusing himself.
“Dr. Zelenka told me a little bit about you,” John began.
“Sir, if you give me a chance…”
“Have you had lunch yet?” John asked.
“No Sir,” O’Malley frowned.
“Come on then. What are your feelings on turkey sandwiches?” John asked as they walked out the door. The scientist just looked bewildered.
SB
John followed Elizabeth into her quarters. “I was right,” John said.
“Oh?” Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at him. “I think we were both right.”
“Okay,” John conceded coming up behind Elizabeth as she stood at her bathroom sink and wrapped his arms around her waist. “We were both right that Carson and Laura are finally engaged. We’re both really smart.”
“Really smart?” She asked turning around to wrap her arms around his neck.
“Uh- huh,” John mumbled kissing Elizabeth’s neck.
They moved things to the bed stripping as they went.
SB
John and Elizabeth were sitting in the mess having breakfast together when they spotted Dr. O’Malley. “So what did you think of him?” Elizabeth asked.
“He eats like Ronon.”
Elizabeth gave John and odd look. “Okay.”
“He’s not big on turkey sandwiches either,” John frowned.
“Is that your way of saying you don’t want him on your team?” Elizabeth asked exasperated.
“I didn’t say that,” John said. “He’s polite and courteous. Probably make a pretty good negotiator in a tight spot. Although he’s not shy about letting you know just how smart he is.”
“Huh,” Elizabeth responded.
“What?” John asked.
“What?” Elizabeth shook her head. “Oh nothing. Your description of him just reminded me of a few people. So have you made a decision about him?”
John eyed her, but moved on. “Not yet.”
