Elizabeth stepped through the Stargate and into the Midway station. She looked around taking in her surroundings. It wasn’t the first time she had been here, but it was still new to her.
She looked back when she heard voices. John and Rodney had just walked through and were bickering about something. She didn’t know what.
They were then met by a small group of technicians and medical personnel. For the next twenty-four hours the three of them would be quarantined before returning to Atlantis.
&
Elizabeth sat down on the edge of her cot. The room was simple; three of the walls had two cots each. One on each was a bunk bed set above the other.
John was leaning back on the bed to her right and Rodney was moving in front of the one to her left.
They had been poked and prodded for the last couple of hours making sure nothing was wrong with them and they wouldn’t be bringing anything strange back to the city.
Elizabeth had had enough poking and prodding to last her a life time. She had spent the last month at the SGC where they had continually checked on her Assuran nanites.
She had used her time at the SGC to secure an alliance with them and the Assurans. Talks had originally begun on Atlantis, but had quickly broken down due to the IOA’s mistrust. She had voluntarily returned to Earth in hopes of changing that.
While there, she had been going through regular tests and they had found every time they examined her there were fewer nanites in her until after a month, there were none at all.
“Anyone hungry?” Rodney asked.
“No,” John said. “You ate a few hours ago.”
“Elizabeth?” Rodney asked ignoring Sheppard.
“I’m fine, Rodney,” she pressed her hand to her stomach. It was doing flip flops to beat the band.
“You okay, Elizabeth?” John asked her sitting on the edge of his cot and looking at her sideways.
“Stomach’s a bit queasy,” she said.
“Maybe you should get some sleep,” John said.
“What are you two going to do?” She asked him.
“Rodney and I’ll play a game of chess.”
“Excuse me, but it’s usually customary to ask if someone wants to do something,” Rodney said from his cot.
John rolled his eyes and shared a grin with Elizabeth. “Rodney, do you want to play with me?”
“What are you, eight? Don’t answer that,” he said.
“I’d say you’re both…”
“I said don’t answer that,” Rodney cut Elizabeth off.
Elizabeth looked at him primly. “My apologies, I didn’t realize you were speaking to me.”
“It was directed at the both of you,” he said and shook his head. “Fine, I’ll play chess with you.”
“He likes me, he really likes me,” John fell back into his pillow clutching his chest dramatically.
“Can we go?” Rodney waved to the door.
John hopped up and grinned at Elizabeth before leaving the little room with Rodney.
Elizabeth shook her head leaning back into her pillow. She rubbed a few circles over her stomach before falling asleep.
&
Elizabeth woke up some time later to the sounds of soft snoring from one side of the room and slight rustling from the other side. Then some cursing accompanied the rustling. “Rodney?” She whispered.
He looked up at her. “Sorry, did I wake you?”
“That’s okay,” she said. “Are you all right?”
“Yeah,” he sighed. “Bed’s not very comfortable.”
“No it’s not,” she said.
She got up and walked over to his cot and sat down on the edge of it.
“Elizabeth?” He stopped fighting with the blankets. “Are you all right?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” She asked. “I’m going home.”
“I don’t know,” he shrugged his shoulders and sat on the edge of the bed next to her. He turned on a small light next to the bed. It was enough for them to see each other, but not so much to light the entire room and disturb the sleeping occupant of the room. “You just seem off. Kinda remind me of Teyla just before she told us she was pregnant…” he stopped in mid sentence and then looked at Elizabeth. “Elizabeth, are you…?” He couldn’t get out the words.
“No,” she shook her head. “But I was.”
Rodney stared at her for a full minute. “Oh…I…um,” he swallowed. He took a breath and looked at her with such compassion it almost knocked her over. “I’m sorry.”
“You don’t want to ask?”
He frowned confused for a moment. “No, it’s not my place.”
“It was John’s,” she said.
Rodney’s eyes wandered over to the sleeping man across the room and his head went down for a moment.
“He doesn’t know,” she said.
Rodney’s head came up. “What?”
“He doesn’t know I was pregnant,” she said.
“Why didn’t you tell him?” He found himself asking.
“I didn’t know I was pregnant until the miscarriage. It happened the day before yesterday.”
“I thought something was going on between you two,” he said. “I just didn’t know…”
“Things started when he found me in that cave he fell in several months ago.”
“He didn’t tell us he found you then until we all ran into you a few months later. When…?” He hesitated.
“When did I become pregnant?” He nodded looking embarrassed. “While I was on Atlantis last time. Things were a bit rocky between us. He was frustrated I was off trying to fix things and not coming home to stay.”
“Are you going to tell him?”
She looked at John for a moment and then back at Rodney. “Eventually. Do you think we can keep this between us?”
Rodney looked her in the eye. “Yes.”
“Thank you,” she felt him put an arm around her and she leaned into him. Her arms came around his middle and she rested her cheek on his shoulder. She could feel the tears she had been fighting spill out and onto his shoulder.
Rodney held on rubbing comforting circles over her back.
&
The next day Elizabeth was getting the few things she had together while John was doing the same. Rodney was off talking with one of the technicians leaving the two alone.
“Elizabeth?”
“Hhmm?” She looked up at John. She frowned at the look on his face. “Is something wrong, John?”
He fidgeted for a moment. “I was just wondering where we stood?”
Her mouth made a little ‘oh’. She walked up to him wrapping her arms around his waist. Her forehead rested against his. “I’m not going to lie to you. It’s going to take me time to get use to being home and use to my role there. Whatever that role is going to be. I still feel a responsibility to the Assurans, but I’m not going anywhere. At least not for long trips. And you’re always invited,” she smiled. “I love you, John Sheppard.”
“I love you too,” he said.
Their lips met in a brief kiss. It was interrupted by the door opening. They both startled and separated.
“Oops,” Rodney smirked. “Bad timing?”
“Nothing new there,” John muttered.
“John,” Elizabeth scolded.
“Are you two about ready to go?” Rodney asked.
“We’re ready,” Elizabeth said.
They entered the little gate room. Elizabeth stood between the two men and took an arm from each of them wrapping them around hers. She gave them both a kiss on the cheek before they stepped through the gate to take them home.
