Title: A Vow to Keep

Summary: Cameron becomes deathly ill. Can they figure out what’s wrong before it’s too late?

A little over Three Months Earlier
They had left two days after deciding to go on the road trip. They waited until their teammates were back so they could have dinner together before leaving. Sam and Vala had the hardest time accepting their plans. Teal’c took it with his usual calm even though underneath it all they could see it was difficult. Dr. Lam was not happy. She wanted to him to stay close to home to keep a close eye on him. Jack always the leader took things in hand and handled Lam and the team.
Daniel was grabbing up his last bag to take to the car when Jack walked in. Cameron was already in the Mustang and the others were down there with him keeping him company.
“Ready?” Jack asked.
“Yeah,” Daniel said. “We’ll be with his parents for at least a week,” Daniel paused. “I don’t know how he’s going to tell them. Or what he’s going to tell them,” there was another moment of silence before Daniel looked at Jack. “Anyway, Sam said they were going to PX-998 tomorrow. There’s just something about the leader on that planet.”
“All right,” Jack cut in. “Time to go.”
Daniel smiled and nodded. Jack moved over and gave him a hug before following him out the door.

They had only been on the road for a few hours when Cameron decided he needed a break. They found a motel and Daniel got them some dinner.
“I want you to promise me something,” Cam turned in the bed to look at Daniel.
“What is it?” Daniel pulled Cam into his arms. He grimaced feeling his lover’s ribcage so prominent.
“You’re suppose to ‘anything you want Cam’,” Cameron teased.
“The last time I made you a promise without knowing what it was first…”
“You have to admit it was fun,” Cameron laughed. His laughter turned into coughs however.
Daniel leaned Cameron back against his chest giving him more support. He pressed his hand flat against Cam’s abdomen and rubbed his back with his other hand.
After a few minutes Cam stopped coughing. He sagged against Daniel. “I hate this.”
“Me too,” Daniel pressed a kiss to the back of Cam’s head. “What were you going to ask me before?”
Cameron took a deep breath and moved to his side so he was looking at Daniel. “Promise me if they don’t find a cure and it’s close to the end, you’ll make sure I’m home. I don’t want to die in a hospital.”
“When you say home you mean your parents or our apartment in Colorado?” Daniel didn’t want to be having this conversation but he knew it had to be done. It wouldn’t be fair to Cameron if they didn’t.
“Home in our apartment together.”
“All right,” Daniel kissed Cameron.
“I don’t know what I’m going to say to my parents tomorrow,” Cameron said.
Daniel tightened his hold on Cam. He didn’t know what to say either.

Daniel looked up when he heard the door open. Frank and Wendy stood in the entrance to the hospital room. They looked as if they had aged ten years since the last time he had seen them.
He pushed himself up off the chair and crossed the room. Two pairs of arms enveloped him holding him close. He noticed his teammates and friends standing just outside the door looking in meeting his eyes. This was what it was like to be part of a family. He had been part of one at times in his life but none of the previous had ever truly sunk in until this one. Cameron and his parents were the finishing touches.

Daniel has a family! And sucky things always happen to his family. Poor all of them. Cam's parents especially, considering how worried they must have been when he was injured so badly before...
