Daniel and Cameron led the way out of the restaurant as Tracy, Jack, Sam, their twins, Vala and Teal’c followed. Tracy had just turned eighteen today and she and Emily and Christina would be graduating from High School in a few months.
“Emily, Christina and I are going to meet some friends,” Tracy told her guardians as they walked through the parking lot. “Then we’ll be staying over at Melissa’s house for the night,” Melissa was the daughter of Susan Woodward who lived a couple blocks from their house. Susan was also their realtor who had found them their house.
“All right,” Cam said. Daniel nodded as well after he looked at Cam.
“Thank you. It was a great night. Tracy gave the two men a hug and a kiss handing over the two shopping bags of presents she received for her birthday before rushing over to her two friends who were talking to their parents.
“And what would you like us to do with these?” Daniel asked holding both bags in his hands.
“Just put them in my room,” she said.
“Daniel, did you hear that?” Cam asked. “Tracy’s letting us in her room.”
“Yes,” Daniel nodded with exaggeration.
Tracy stood in front of them rolling her eyes. “Good night,” she said in a sing song voice before joining her friends who had just finished talking with their parents.
“Pretty soon we’ll have the house all to ourselves every day,” Cam said.
Daniel handed one bag over to Cam and wrapped an arm around his lover.
“Already feeling empty nest?” Jack asked coming up next to her friends.
“You too?” Cam asked.
Jack nodded. Sam stepped closer to her husband wrapping an arm around his back.
“What is this empty nest you speak of?” Teal’c asked.
“It’s what happens when your kids leave the home to go out on their own,” Daniel explained. “Parents feel a little lost, not sure what to do with themselves now that the responsibility of raising the children is gone.”
Teal’c looked at them thoughtful. “Ry’ac spoke of his mother feeling something similar before she died.”
The group was silent for a little while as they continued to walk at a slow pace. It was early in December, but the weather was mild. The sky was clear allowing the stars to shine.
Daniel looked over at Vala who was walking between the two couples in their group. “You’ve been rather quiet,” he said to her.
She just shrugged looking at the distance in front of her. “I was just thinking of what could have been,” she took a deep breath and turned her head to look at Daniel with a smile when Daniel reached out squeezing her hand with his. “Anyway, anyone up for drinks or something?”
Several no’s were the answer to her idea.
“Oh come on,” she tried.
“We’re tired, Vala,” Daniel told her.
Eventually she gave up as they made it to their cars. Goodnight hugs were shared before they went their separate ways.
Vala had acquired an apartment years ago to everyone’s surprise. But in time she proved she could be trusted to move freely on the planet. Teal’c never got another apartment mainly because he spent more time with his fellow Jaffa than on Earth. He was more of a liaison to both worlds now.
Daniel climbed into the passenger side of the car after Cameron.
“Daniel?” Cameron nudged his arm when Daniel hadn’t shut the door.
“Hmm?” Daniel looked at his lover.
“Are you okay?” Cam asked.
“Yeah,” Daniel nodded. Except he wasn’t really, but he didn’t say anything because he really didn’t know what it was.
“Daniel, I’m pretty sure our days of cloak and dagger are behind us,” Cameron told his lover.
“Darn, I always liked that part of the job too,” Daniel smiled.
“It is a bit mundane, isn’t it?” Cam grinned.
It had been about four years since the Stargate program had finally gone public. Things had settled down in the last year and a half and there wasn’t as much trouble out there as there once was. And they were getting close to retirement age.
“Let’s go home,” Daniel said.

Entering the house, Daniel turned on a light. He turned and helped Cam out of his coat and Cam helped Daniel out of his. Putting them away they went upstairs only to stop in the middle of the stairs.
“He’s plotting,” Cameron remarked.
“Plotting to do what?” Daniel asked reaching down and picking up the gray cat lying on the stair step.
“Kill us,” Cam said.
Daniel rolled his eyes. They had got a cat when Tracy turned twelve. It was about four years after Sam, Joey’s dog, had passed away. Tracy had seen the stray cat in the neighborhood and had immediately fallen in love.
She named the cat Homer. Daniel and Cameron had hoped Tracy was reading the Odyssey at school when she came up with that name. Unfortunately it turned out Uncle Jack was sharing his love for the Simpsons with their girl.
Daniel turned back still holding the cat. “I should give him some food and clean his litter box,” he said.
“All right,” Cam said. “I’ll put Tracy’s presents in her room.”
Their lives had become routine in the last seventeen years, at least when they weren’t off world saving lives. Cam could see Daniel was getting restless and thought maybe they could go on a trip in the fall when Tracy was off to college.
Joe was living in New Mexico with his wife Sharon who was eight months pregnant with their first child. Cam figured the three of them would visit them in a month.
Cam sat down on the edge of his and Daniel’s bed after putting Tracy’s presents away. He wondered where the time had gone. Tracy was on her way to college soon. Joe was married and on his way to become a parent for the first time. And Cam and Daniel would be-Cam shrugged his shoulders. Not exactly grandparents.
Daniel walked in then and gave Cam an appraising look. “What are you thinking about?” He asked. “Wait, don’t tell me,” he interrupted Cam before he could speak. “You’re wondering where the time has gone.”
“I’m that predictable?” Cam asked.
“You get this way with every birthday since Joe turned eighteen,” Daniel said kissing Cam on the lips. “Oh and I vote for letting the child call us whatever he or she wants,” at Cam’s confused frown Daniel added, “Joe and Sharon’s child.”
Cam smiled before standing up. “Come on, let’s get ready for bed.”
When they were ready for bed they climbed in together. Cameron leaned over and kissed Daniel. “Are you all right?”
“Yeah,” Daniel looked distracted however.
“Are you sure?” Cam asked.
Daniel sighed. “I don’t know. Something wasn’t right during dinner.”
“Are you feeling all right?” Cam sat up ready to act if necessary.
“Yeah,” Daniel placed a hand on Cam’s arm. “I’m fine. Healthy as a horse,” he smiled. “No, it’s not me.”
“Then what?” Cam was getting agitated.
“Relax, Cam,” Daniel pulled his lover into his arms. “Look,” he sighed. “I didn’t want to say anything because I don’t know what it is. It’s just this feeling something’s off.”
“Would you like to call everyone make sure they got home all right and Tracy’s fine?” Cam asked.
Daniel shook his head. “It’s silly,” Daniel dismissed it.
“Are you sure?” Cam asked.
“I’m sure,” Daniel pressed a kiss to Cam’s lips.
Cam looked at Daniel but didn’t push the issue. It took them a little longer than usual, but they both fell asleep eventually.

The ringing of the telephone woke Cameron out of a sound sleep. He looked over and Daniel wasn’t in bed, but he heard movement in the bathroom. When the phone continued to ring, Cam picked it up. “Sam?” He recognized her voice and he could hear in it something was wrong. “Sam, what’s wrong?” The memory of something bothering Daniel last night had suddenly come back to Cam.

Interesting coincidence that I'm looking at an empty nest by the end of the summer. It's an odd time, that's for sure.
So, now I should get ready for angsty stuff?
