“When’s the fireworks, Daniel?” Five year old Tracy asked as she and Daniel walked into the kitchen.

“Not until later tonight, Tracy,” Daniel said. “Why don’t we put this candy away for now,” he took the bag of candy Tracy had in her hand.

Daniel, Tracy, Sam and her kids had just returned from the local Fourth of July parade and carnival. The people in the parade had thrown candy out for the kids along the sides of the street who were watching the parade.

Daniel let Joey stay at the carnival with his friends. Cameron and Jack had gone out to get some supplies for the cookout they were having in the evening.

“Uh Daniel,” Sam came into the kitchen with her twins in toe. “I think you should take a look outside.

Daniel turned to head for the front door when he heard noises coming from the backyard. He turned back and went to the back door sticking his head out.

“I wanna see,” three little voices said at once.

“Come on girls,” Sam’s voice came from behind. “Let’s find something for lunch.”

Daniel stepped out onto the back porch. “What the hell is going on?” He glared at the two men.

“Hot out here,” Jack remarked giving Cameron’s shoulder a pat. “I’ll be right,” he slipped past Daniel and inside the house.

“We needed a new grill,” Cam shrugged his shoulders.

“No,” Daniel shook his head stepping down from the porch and approaching his lover. “We did not need a new grill. We have perfectly good grill already. And how did you get this on the Fourth of July?”

“The store’s open until one,” Cameron explained.

Daniel checked his watch. “Great,” he muttered. There was no way Cam could get this grill back before the store closed.

“Come on Daniel,” Cam said. “Just take a look at this baby.”

Daniel’s shoulders slumped in resignation. Finally threw up his arms. “All right, show me.”

Cameron grinned looking like a kid in a candy store. Daniel shook his head and bit the inside of his mouth to keep from smiling too. It was hard being the serious one faced with that look.

“You are still in trouble for this,” Daniel said as sternly as he could while entering into the house with Cam. “And you,” Daniel pointed his finger at Jack.

“What?” Jack did his best innocent act.

“You are a terrible influence,” Daniel responded.

“You know you love it,” Cameron teased.

“Uncle Daniel, what’s terrible influence mean?” Emily asked from the counter where she sat with her sister Chrissie and Tracy.

“Uh,” Daniel tried to think of what he could say.

“What’s this?” Tracy scrunched up her nose and poked at her sandwich.

“It’s a pickle,” Sam explained.

“It’s slimy,” Tracy complained.

The question directed at Daniel from Emily was suddenly forgotten as the girls started examining their sandwiches and picking them apart.

“Who wants ice cream?” Cameron asked. All three girls yelled ‘me’.

Daniel leaned back against the counter next to Sam. “I’d say ‘men’, except I’m one of them.”

Sam gave him a sympathetic look and patted him on the shoulder while they watched Cameron and Jack dish out ice cream for the girls.

It was just before five and everyone was out in the back yard. Teal’c and Vala had just arrived and Cameron was getting ready to start the grill.

Daniel’s cell phone rang. “Joey, are you on your way home? No, we want you home. You spent all afternoon with your friends; it’s time to spend the rest of the day with your family. A half an hour, Joey,” a few seconds later Daniel turned off his phone and put it away.

Cameron came over next to Daniel. “What he say?”

“He wants to watch the fireworks at his friend Steve’s house,” Daniel said. “I told him to be here no later than a half an hour.”

“Who’s ready for some fireworks of our own?” Jack asked.

They set the chairs up in the driveway far enough away from their fireworks.

“Jack, how much did you get?” Daniel asked following his friend to his truck where everything was stored.

“Enough for tonight and maybe next year,” Jack said.

Daniel’s eyebrows rose.

“Hey, I had to go a ways to get these,” Jack defended. “They don’t sell these here.”

The garage was opened so Jack brought everything inside there. He selected something and walked out halfway down the driveway. He lit it and backed off. It spun around on the ground in a small ball of fire.

The girls squealed hiding around and behind the adults.

Jack set off something else a minute later that shot up in the air making a loud bang and a little bit of sparkle in the sky.

His next one was a little car that when it was lit sparked on one side rolling one direction and then sparked on another side rolling in the opposite direction.

“I’m getting close to done with the food,” Cameron said.

“I’ve got one more that should be set off while it’s still light out,” Jack said.

There was a pop and suddenly several little red parachutes came floating down from the sky.

“Tracy, look,” Daniel pointed up to the sky.

The girls were now squealing with delight. Daniel and Jack walked with the girls towards the end of the driveway to collect the little parachutes.

Joey showed up as they finished collecting the parachutes with a sour look on his face.

“Could you at least try to look happy to see us,” Daniel said walking up the driveway with the others.

“There’s nobody my age here,” Joey said to Daniel.

“I know,” Daniel gave Joey’s shoulder a sympathetic pat.

At least two spills and about six reprimands to the girls to stay seated while eating and one reprimand to the dog for trying to eat someone else’s food, they were finally finished with dinner. With two four year olds and one five year old dinner could be a long affair.

“Can I set something off, Uncle Jack?” Joey asked.

Jack looked over his shoulder and Daniel and Cameron who nodded. It was always very clear when Jack changed from silly to serious and this was serious. He kept a close eye on Joey as they shot something off offering them a big bang and bright colors in the sky.

They pulled out the sparklers for the kids. Daniel and Cameron stood by Tracy as she held her sparkler out waving it around in circles. Sam and Jack did the same with their kids.

Cameron pulled out his camera after making sure everyone had a sparkler in hand and took a picture.

“When’s the fireworks?” Tracy asked.

“Soon,” Daniel said looking at his watch. Just another twenty minutes he sighed.

Jack set off a few more fireworks before the girls played with the dog.

The fireworks would be seen in the backyard so they set up chairs and blankets. Cameron put the dog in the house a few minutes before they were to start.

Teal’c and Vala sat on one of the blankets. They had long since learned that if they wanted to understand Earth holidays they should go to Daniel. Of course Vala’s favorite Earth holidays always involved presence. Teal’c could appreciate the sentiment of the Fourth of July.

Daniel and Cameron sat together on one of the blankets with Tracy between them. They weren’t sure of how Tracy would react to the fireworks; she hadn’t liked them the last two years and her first year with them on the Fourth they had put her to bed before they even started.

Sam and Jack sat in chairs each holding one of their kids. The two girls never seemed to have a problem with the fireworks.

Joey sat in a chair as well trying to look disinterested and bored.

When the fireworks started Tracy surprised them by squealing in delight.

“Look at that one, Tracy,” Cameron pointed.

“Smiley face,” Tracy said.

“Yep,” Cam ruffled her hair.

“What shape is that one?” Daniel pointed to the next one.

“A heart,” Tracy said.

“Ew, that looks like a spider,” Tracy said about the next one causing the two men to laugh.

Soon the finale came with dozens of flashes all at once. Tracy had been enjoying herself so much she surprised them by burying her face in Cameron’s chest.

“It’s okay,” Cam hugged her. “It’s almost over.”

Everything went silent for a moment and then they could hear cheers through the neighborhood.

“More fireworks,” Tracy said.

“Nope,” Cam said. “Time for bed.”

“I don’t wanna go to bed,” Tracy whined.

“Somebody’s getting tired,” Daniel whispered to Cam.

It was late and their friends were getting ready to leave. Jack and Sam loaded their kids into the car. Teal’c offered to help clean up, but Daniel and Cam thanked him and said they’d leave most of it until the morning, so Tealc’ and Vala soon left as well.

Daniel and Cam brought a few things into the house leaving the kids outside. Daniel came back out a minute later to find Joey and Tracy each with a broom sweeping up the driveway.

“What’s the hold up?” Cam asked coming up behind Daniel.

Daniel placed his finger to his lips and pointed at their kids. Cam came up behind Daniel wrapping his arms around his lover’s waist and resting his chin on Daniel’s shoulder. They watched as the kids finished sweeping up the driveway.

That was fun! Sounded a lot like the last family bbq we had here. :D You've got Joey's teen angst down really well. LOL!

Thanks. While there were no teenagers around during this year's 4th of July, there was a five year old. :D I was at a family friend's house and her son who I grew up with has a five year old. So the fic was inspired by my 4th of July this year. :D
