Series: Family Ties
A/N: I don’t think Col. Reynolds has ever been given a first name so Dan is my creation. I know it’s just a shortening of Daniel but I think life we sometimes meet others with the same name as ours or more than one person with the same name
SG-1 was trudging through thick grass heading back to the Stargate after three hours spent with the Morcan on PX-239. It was a continued effort to keep good relations with the people of other planets.
The walk between the gate and the Morcan’s settlement was long however. It was more than a three hour trek both ways mostly due to the thick grass.
When they had stepped through the gate seven and a half hours earlier Cameron grumbled about the long walk wishing for one of those Puddlejumpers in Atlantis.
Daniel had responded in a joking tone that he would look into getting them one during his trip to Atlantis next week.
Cameron whipped his head around looking at Daniel. “What did you say?”
“I said I’d look into getting us a Puddlejumper while I was on Atlantis next week. Of course we’d have to find someone to fly the-” Daniel was repeating.
“Wait, when were you going to tell me you were going to Atlantis?” Cameron demanded glaring at his lover.
“Guys, mind if we get moving,” Sam said. It was less a request and more an order.
Cam’s jaw clenched as he stepped back and continued forward. “Well?” Cam said after several seconds of silence.
Daniel peered over at Cam. “Was that directed at me?”
“Yes,” Cam replied jaw still tensed.
Daniel’s lips moved into the shape of an ‘o’. “I told you last weekend when we were over at Jack and Sam’s.” Daniel turned his head to his other side when he heard Sam snickering. “What?”
“That wouldn’t happen to be when Jack and Cam were watching the game?” She asked.
“I do believe it was, Colonel Carter,” Teal’c replied.
Vala came up next to Sam sharing in her amusement.
“It was during the commercial,” Daniel argued. He knew it was lame and he intended to remind Cameron later, but he forgot.
“Daniel,” Sam shook her head. “You should know better.”
“You can’t go,” Cam’s sharp voice cut in.
“Excuse me?” Daniel spun around staring at his lover.
“Monday’s the first day of school,” Cam said. “Tracy’s starting kindergarten. It’ll be a new place for her.”
“You can’t tell me what I can and cannot do,” Daniel spoke in a low voice. It might have sounded calm to the average person, but to those who knew him it was anything but calm.
“Guys,” Sam cut in with another order. “Let’s pick up the pace here, I’ve got two girls at home I’d like to see before they’re in bed tonight.”
The rest of the walk was in silence.
Now halfway back to the gate Daniel broke the silence. Their group had been strained with Daniel and Cameron barely speaking to one another as they spent time with the Morcan. The leader Lucia had noticed the tension Daniel was sure but she kept her thoughts to herself. Daniel was just glad there had been no damage to relations with the Morcan.
“I can’t back out of this trip now, I’ve been planning this for weeks,” Daniel said.
“I know you’ve been planning this for weeks,” Cam responded. “But why didn’t you tell me it was going to be the same week school started?”
“I didn’t know until last week,” Daniel said.
Cam scrubbed at his face but didn’t say anything. The rest of the walk back to the gate was in silence.

When they returned to the SGC Landry told them all they could de-brief in the morning. It was nearly seven and some of them had kids to get home to.
“You know, I’ve had to sacrifice a lot of my career,” Daniel said sitting in the passenger’s side of the car as Cameron drove them to Col. Reynolds’ house. Dan Reynolds’ wife Karen had a daycare in her house for parents who were SGC personnel. She along with a couple other wives of SGC personnel worked together. Sometimes they would still have a few children waiting for a parent in the evening. If the parents were gone longer than the day they would make other arrangements.
During the summer Joey stuck close to friends’ houses and in the last two summers he had a part time job at a local grocery store.
“Personally I would love to be able to spend as much time at home as you do,” Cam retorted.
“So what you’re saying is I’m a terrible parent for wanting to work,” Daniel replied.
“I didn’t say that,” Cam’s jaw began to clench again just as they pulled into the Reynolds’ driveway. “Look, we’re here, let’s not upset Tracy.”
Daniel just nodded his head before getting out of the car and following Cam up to the front door.

Through the drive home Tracy seemed to be oblivious to the tension between her two guardians thankfully. She spent the time babbling on about her day and then she started talking about kindergarten coming soon. The five year old was full of excitement for her next experience.
Tracy was the one of their two kids who seemed able to take things in stride. Joey tended to be more shy and cautious with new experiences.
By the time Cam turned the corner onto their street Tracy had quieted down. A check in the rearview mirror from Daniel confirmed that she had fallen asleep.
Getting out of the car once it was parked they both headed for the back door. “I’ve got her,” Cam said.
Daniel felt a little sting at the tone in Cam’s voice as if he had no right to pick Tracy up. He turned and headed for the front door fumbling for the house key.
“Hey,” Joey got up from the couch as they came in one at a time.
Cam pressed a finger to his lips to quiet the boy. “I’m going to put her to bed,” he whispered.
“Have you eaten yet?” Daniel asked Joey.
“Yeah,” Joey frowned sitting back down on the couch and watching Daniel.
“Homework done?” Daniel asked absently.
“Er Daniel, I don’t start school until Monday,” Joey’s frown deepened. “Is everything okay?”
“Hmm?” Daniel looked over at Joey as he put his jacket away. “Oh yeah, just tired.”
Joey couldn’t understand what a linguist and archeologist was doing for the US air force and how it was he got injured in the various ways he had in the last three years.
“Have you eaten?” Daniel said turning towards the kitchen.
“Yes,” Joey gave Daniel a look that simply said ‘duh’.
“Oh right, sorry. I guess I asked you that already,” Daniel blushed slightly. “So is there anything left of our food?”
Joey rolled his eyes following Daniel into the kitchen. They were always teasing him that he was going to eat them out of house and home.

Daniel sank into the mattress next to a sleeping Cameron. He had spent the rest of the evening in his office after getting something to eat. He waited for everyone to go to bed before he finally slipped into his and Cam’s bedroom.
He new he and Cameron needed to talk but he just wasn’t up for it tonight. Cam apparently wasn’t either; he had just let Daniel slip into his office for the rest of the evening.
Daniel felt a little guilty for not dealing with it sooner though. He knew Joey sensed something wasn’t right and the teenager started picking things up around the house, a sure sign he was stressed.
