White Collar Season Premiere
I will try to give some coherent thoughts on last night’s episode of White Collar instead of “adggomgjs!”. Okay it’s not really that bad.
First of all Peter had to deal with an inquiry to get his badge back. That was handled PDQ. Then he runs into Diana and they discuss the flash drive Diana got with info from Fowler’s computer last season. The encrypted info disappeared by a virus but she was able to get a time and location for a meeting.
Next Peter visits Neal in prison. Fowler has disappeared and OPR is denying any offer given to Neal so Neal is suspected of running-possibly being responsible for the plane explosion. Peter offers Neal his previous work release with Peter to finish out his three years and change sentence. Then Mozzie arrives and Peter leaves with Neal saying he’d think about it.
Two months later Neal is back robbing a bank for the FBI to test its security.
As Matt Bomer has said in many interviews they’re jumping ahead a couple months so they don’t have to deal with the really extreme emotions Neal was dealing with after the explosion. Disappointing for fans who want to get into the really gut wrenching stuff but it’s TV and it needs to move forward. But at the office there was a moment where his attention wandered and Peter could tell Neal was thinking about it and he asked Neal if he was all right and he of course said he was. A short time later Neal’s at his desk and his hands start shaking. Peter is watching him from his office. So it’s not completely swept under the rug.
Amusingly we find Peter is meeting with Mozzie to compare notes on Neal’s state of mind. Mozzie’s all cloak and dagger. Probably doesn’t want to ruin his rep by meeting with "the suit". LOL. They had a second meeting the same way later in the episode. Both good scenes but hopefully they don’t over play this. The second meeting of the two, Peter told Mozzie he (Peter) was Neal’s friend too. It was Peter’s way of trying to get Mozzie to keep Neal out of trouble by showing Mozzie Peter has Neal’s best interest at heart. Of course Neal being Neal and Mozzie being Mozzie that won’t likely work too well.
Tim Matheson guest stars as the bad guy of the week. The case is bank heists. There are several good moments between Neal and Peter throughout. With everything that is going on with Mentor and the music box and the plane not only is Neal’s position tenuous but so is Peter’s. Neal obtains some information about a possible bank heist being planned in his usual questionable way only to find the information to be bad and the bad guy having set them up making them look bad. It doesn’t make Peter look good in front of the DOJ (Department of Justice).
At one point Peter has lunch with Elizabeth. Due to Tiffani Theissen being very pregnant at the time they shot some scenes with her in LA using green screen. Not the best green screen I’ve ever seen but not a lot to be done although I think they could have used a non-descript restaurant in LA and got away with it.
Anyway most of Peter and Elizabeth’s conversation is about Neal. Peter mentions the fact that just before the plane explosion Neal was about to say something. Later at the Burkes’ house Neal is there with Peter talking about the case and Neal tells Peter what he was going to tell him. He said he was tired of running. He thought if he talked to Kate they’d stay and Peter would protect Kate if it was needed. I was surprised Neal revealed so much at this point. I think they might have been better to reveal that at a later episode.
In the end they foiled the bad guys and had to break into the bank again-this time both Neal and Peter. A rather amusing scene.
The last scene had Peter calling Diana. She was standing in front of her closet with her safe opened. She pulled out her gun and loaded it and as she did that they reveal that she has the music box. It’s funny it never occurred to me when I watched this the first time but I’ve found that reading around online that there are those who are questioning Diana’s loyalty as if she’s working for the bad guys because she has the music box. My first thought was that Peter and Diana took the music box to keep it from getting into the wrong hands our flush out the bad guys possibly. At no moment did I think she’s working for the bad guys. It’s the same reaction I had with the midseason finale from s1 when it showed Peter with the ring meeting Kate in the hotel room.
I guess I’m just old school when it comes to TV. The good guys are always the good guys. There are never surprises. I think some people watch too many of those shows with conspiracies all around where you never know the good guys from the bad guys.
All in all a very enjoyable episode. I think eventually Neal and Peter are both going to have to come to the realization that when they keep things from each other (even if it’s under good intentions) it doesn’t work out so well. I can understand why Peter is keeping the details of his investigation from Neal but I’m not entirely sure of Neal’s motives for keeping his side of things from Peter.
