Ever come across a fanfic you really wanted to get your hands on to fix its grammar, spelling, not to mention bad characterization? I came across a couple of those recently. The premise was good, but the rest not so good.
Yup! It happened a few times when I was reading a fic in French. I hate grammar/spelling errors. I mean, a few are ok, because you and your beta can miss one or two while re-reading it. But too many? No! I've said it once for an fic in English because though it's not my first language, I can see mistakes. But god, sometimes with fics in French... Once I even wanted to change everything in the fic 'cos I so thought the author never watched Atlantis! (it was a Pretender/Atlantis crossover)
The storyline, at least what I've read so far, is good but I always find it hard to get into a fic when there's mistakes bc I end up beta'ing it in my head.
At first I did wonder if the site had been hacked and that had caused all the errors, bc as someone who has written fic I now I have to proof read it at least twice before I post it, and then I'll usually read it again once posted to make sure I haven't missed any obvious spelling mistakes, etc.
I always think it's a shame when a good story gets wasted, all bc of a lack of a beta.
