Stargate
Maybe I'm just not made for fandom. People complain about lack of Consequences or fall out for characters. There are those who say character x should be tossed out.
All I can think is this is Stargate. Since the beginning of Stargate SG-1 characters have gotten away with many different things with no more than a slap on the wrist. They create some big conflict between characters and then drop it by the next episode. We're lucky if it ever gets a mention again. And character x will always make decisions based on the needs of the plot. It wouldn't matter if they replaced him with someone else.
Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are not Babylon 5 or Firefly.
I guess I'm just not one for over thinking these shows. I watch them for the adventurous fun.

Now putting aside the fact I think Caldwell would be boring as a leader for a moment; whoever replaces Sheppard would be making the same types of decisions. Because hello they're fictional characters. They're subject to the whims of writers. The writers have a particular plot in mind and they're going to do whatever they have to to get where they want to go. If the characters have to do something a little stupid to accomplish that they're going to do that.
It was actually pointed out to some in a thread discussing Weir's decisions that SG-1 is just as guilty of making bad decisions and getting a mere slap on the wrist. But they responded with not having watched much of SG-1 and it was only one planet they put at risk. Rollseyes.
The way some people rant about these characters you'd think they were real people making real life decisions.
B5 and Firefly were the only Scifi shows I could think of that were written with the characters more in mind. Where the stories were tighter. The creator of B5 new exactly what he wanted for the show and wrote most of the scripts himself. Joss Whedon has always been a stickler about keeping his characters true to who they are.
Don't get me wrong, I love Stargate Atlantis. I just come to it with my eyes opened knowing all its flaws and what it will and will not do. I hate to say this because it sounds like an insult to the show, but it's not that high calibur of a show. I'm guilty of comparing it to other shows, but I don't think it's fair to do that to shows.
All that to say I just don't analyze this show to death. Or any show for that matter. I just like to chat about what I enjoyed.
