anuna_81’s lj about John Sheppard
He could hear an alarm and then a voice yelling his name. John’s eyes snapped open. For a single moment he felt like he was falling. His hands gripped the handles of the chair he sat in. What he was doing in a chair he couldn’t recall.
“John.”
John looked up towards the voice speaking to him. Elizabeth was looking down at him. Her eyes were bloodshot and dark circles embedded underneath.
“John, you need to move,” she said.
John looked over and realized he was in the infirmary. Oh God, the memories crashed over him. Then he realized what was happening. “Rodney?” Carson and the rest of his medical team were surrounding the bed across from John.
“Carson’s doing everything he can,” Elizabeth said squeezing John’s shoulder.
John jumped up from his seat trying to get a better look needing to know what was happening. He realized the alarm he had heard in his dream was the heart monitor hooked up to McKay.
“Clear!” Carson shouted.
John’s entire body shuddered when he caught a glimpse of Rodney’s body jerking upwards from the volts of electricity coming out of the defibrillator.
He heard Carson order the defibrillator be set at a higher level. John had to look away this time as Rodney’s body arched and then fell back to the mattress.
There was a long moment of silence before Carson’s next words froze John in his place. “Time of death, 05:33.”
“No!” John found his voice and rushed to the side of Rodney’s bed where Carson still stood. The rest of the medical team had departed.
One hand landed on John’s shoulder and another on his arm. “You can’t give up!” John turned on Carson reaching out to grab the lapels of the doctor’s lab coat.
“John,” the hands that were on John tugged him back enough to get his attention. “John, please,” he looked down at the woman at his side seeing the tears slipping down her cheeks.
John looked back at Carson seeing the misery in his eyes. He squeezed his eyes shut clenching his hands into fists.
“John,” it was Carson who had placed his hands on John’s shoulders. John opened his eyes. “John” Carson’s voice was gentle, “if I could bring them back I would.”
John closed his eyes again taking a deep breath. “I know, Carson,” his voice was ruff. “I’m sorry,” he looked at his two remaining friends. “I need...” John waved his hand unable to speak.
Carson nodded giving John’s shoulder a light squeeze before letting go.
John looked at Elizabeth and pleaded with his eyes for her understanding. She turned into him giving him a hug. He wrapped his arms around her without even thinking of what he was doing; his usual awkwardness with being hugged disappearing for once.
He pulled away after a few minutes. Swallowing past the lump in his throat he looked over at the lifeless body of his best friend. His hand came out hovering over the top of Rodney’s head before he pulled it away after a few seconds.
John turned and walked out of the infirmary leaving Carson and Elizabeth standing together. Carson pulled Elizabeth into a brief hug before asking his staff to take care of Rodney’s body.
“Come on, love,” he took Elizabeth’s hand and guided her out of the room.
“Where are we going?” Elizabeth asked not able to make a decision of what to do at the moment.
“We are going to get very drunk,” he said.
