They had been stuck on the Odyssey for five years when tragedy struck the group. Four years earlier Daniel and Vala had gotten together. Seven months earlier she found out she was pregnant and less than a week earlier Vala had miscarried and died as well due to complications.

Everyone was dealing with their own grief in various ways, but Daniel had shut himself away from the others. No one had seen him for the past three days after he had walked out of the infirmary minutes after Vala was declared dead.

Cameron had wrecked his quarters for the third time in the last five years after Daniel had walked off in a daze. The next day he had eaten a silent lunch with Sam, Teal’c and Landry.

Now after three days of not hearing or seeing Daniel, Cameron decided he needed to do something. Against Teal’c and Sam’s advice, Cameron entered Daniel’s quarters without warning.

The room was dim and Cameron almost tripped over something on the floor. It was the proverbial tornado in a room. Daniel normally very contained let loose on everything in his room. Cameron winced at the broken picture frame and picture of Daniel with his arms wrapped around Vala’s grow midsection. His hands rested on the baby bump just beginning to show.

The crib they had been able to create with the Asgard technology had one of its legs broken off. It now leaned to the side.

Cameron continued through the room until he reached the bed. He could just make out Daniel’s form. He was lying on his side with his back to Cameron. Cameron bent his knee and set it down on the bed. Placing his hands down on the mattress he lowered himself into a sitting position.

“Go away,” a muffled voice ordered.

“Nope,” Cameron said.

Daniel sighed and turned over on his back. He looked up at Cameron and blinked a few times. “What do you want?”

“I wanted to see how you were doing,” Cameron said.

“The woman I love is dead. Our baby is dead. How do you think I’m doing?” Daniel turned so his back was to Cameron again.

Cameron lifted his hand above Daniel and hesitated for all of a second before letting it rest on Daniel’s side. “Look, I just want you to know we’re all here when you’re ready to join the living,” he slid his hand up to Daniel’s shoulder giving it a squeeze before letting go and leaving the room.

SB

A day later Cameron was sitting on his bed propped up with the pillows reading when the door buzzed. He called to whoever it was to come in. A second later he was surprised to see Daniel standing in the doorway.

He looked pale and his eyes were bloodshot. He looked like he had lost some weight as well.

“Daniel,” the word fell from Cameron’s lips without thought. He had not called Daniel by his first name much if ever in his recollection.

“Hi,” Daniel’s voice was tentative and roughened from disuse. “Can I come in?”

“Sure,” Cameron got up and made a place on the couch for them to sit. “So, read any of the Assgard library lately?” He asked going for something neutral.

Daniel’s lips turned up into a half smile. “You could say that. I’ve probably read more of it in the last week than in the entire time we’ve been stuck here.”

“Anything interesting?” Cam shifted so he was sitting sideways with one leg on the couch facing Daniel. He relaxed as he watched Daniel become animated about what he had learned. It had been awhile since Cam had seen Daniel this way and he was glad to see it.

“Cameron, are you coming to dinner?”

Sam’s voice startled Cam and he looked at his watch. He and Daniel had been talking for an hour. God, he suddenly felt like they were a couple of girls chatting away and gossiping. He looked at Daniel with a question on his face. Daniel shrugged indicating a yes that he would join them for dinner.

They entered the dining room and three pairs of eyes looked up at them in total silence.

“What are we having?” Cameron asked casually. The tension eased as they sat down and Sam told them what was for dinner.

Nobody spoke of what happened less than a week earlier, choosing to stick to other topics. Daniel didn’t say much, only asking a question here and there about whatever the conversation was or adding in his two cents.
