Daniel was walking out of the bedroom when his phone rang. “Hi Sam,” he said. “No…”
“Daniel!” The bellowing came from his and Cameron’s bedroom.
Daniel grimaced. “We’re not going to be able to making it to dinner tonight.”
“Daniel!” It was more of a whine this time.
“Yeah, that cold he had Friday got worse today. Listen, I better go before his highness bellows again,” Daniel laughed and turned off his phone.
Turning back toward the bedroom, Daniel took a deep breath before stepping into the lion’s den. “Something I can do for you?” Daniel asked in his calmest voice putting on a smile.
Cameron lay propped up by three pillows. He was wrapped up in his favorite dark blue terrycloth robe and the blankets were tucked under his chin. His nose was red as were his eyes.
Crumpled Kleenex were scattered around him and a box and a half were sitting on the night stand.
“More water please?” His voice was rough and he started coughing again.
Daniel sat on the edge of the bed placing his hand on Cameron’s back rubbing soothing circles. When he couldn’t cough anymore, Cam leaned over resting his head on Daniel’s shoulder.
“Need anything else?” Daniel asked.
Cameron lifted his head and Daniel could see him bracing himself as he cut loose with a sneeze. For a brief moment Daniel had a comical image in head of everything in the room being blown out the door by the single sneeze. He reached over and grabbed a handful of Kleenex handing to his lover.
Daniel stood up and grabbed Cam’s glass while the other man blew into the Kleenex.
Daniel went to the kitchen and made a couple of sandwiches figuring Cam wouldn’t have too much of an appetite. He pulled out a tray from a cupboard and placed their food and drinks on it.
He shook his head when he looked at his lover. Cameron looked pitiful and Daniel suspected he was milking this sickness just a little. Daniel gave an internal shrug deciding it didn’t matter. At least not yet.
Epilogue
It was a week later when Daniel woke up realizing that tickle he felt the nigh before had grown. He promptly pulled the blanket up to his chin and turned on his other side to stare at the man waking up next to him.
“I hate you.”
“What?” Cameron looked at Daniel who had just pulled the covers over his head. He heard coughing and pulled the blanket off Daniel’s head. “I’ll call Sam and tell her we won’t be having dinner with her and the rest of the team.”
As Cameron left the bedroom Daniel considered telling his lover to go on without him, but changed his mind as a coughing fit took over.
