Three Months Earlier
They arrived at Cam’s parents in the afternoon. Cameron had called them before they had left Colorado to tell them they were visiting.
Daniel climbed out of the driver’s seat and walked over to the passenger’s seat to help Cameron out. Cam took his hand and pulled himself out of the car.
The front door opened then and Cam’s Mom Wendy came out meeting them at the car. They saw his Dad Frank standing just inside the door waving.
“Cameron, Daniel,” Wendy rested her hands on either side of her son’s face and kissed his forehead. “It’s so good to see the both of you.” She pulled back to look at him and frowned.
“Mom, we need to talk,” Cameron said.
Wendy looked to Daniel who tried to give her a reassuring look.
As they walked up the front steps Daniel kept a hand at the small of Cameron’s back making sure he kept his balance. When they entered the house Cameron gave his dad a hug. When he pulled away Cam could see the worry on his dad’s face.
They all sat down in the living room. Wendy fussed for a moment asking if anyone wanted anything.
“Mom,” it was enough to stop her frenetic movement and sit down.
“Son, what’s going on?” His dad finally asked.
“I was out of the country a few months ago,” Cameron managed the lie. The feel of Daniel’s shoulder touching his calmed him. “The doctors don’t know what it is. Whatever it is, it’s not contagious.”
“But?” His father prompted when he hesitated.
“If they don’t find something I probably won’t survive beyond another six months,” he choked on his last few words.
“Oh god,” Wendy cried. Cam walked over and kneeled down in front of her wrapping his arms around her. His father’s face fell and he stared down at the floor.
“There has to be something,” Wendy pulled back and wiped her face. She rested a hand against Cameron’s cheek looking at him. “We can’t lose you after getting you back whole only a few years ago,” she began to cry again.
Frank leaned over and wrapped an arm around his wife. His other hand reached out placing it on his son’s shoulder.
Present
“Mom,” Cameron’s voice was no more than a whisper. “Dad.”
“Son,” Frank wrapped his hand around Cameron’s hand.
“Oh my sweet boy,” Wendy brushed a hand through Cameron’s hair.
“I want to go home,” Cameron said.
“Cameron honey, I don’t think leaving the hospital to go back to Kansas would be such a good idea,” Wendy said but Cameron had fallen asleep.
Daniel stepped up next to Wendy. “He wants to go back to our apartment.”
“Cameron needs to be in the hospital right now,” Cameron’s mother said.
“Wendy,” Frank looked at his wife. “Let’s let the boy go where he wants to be.”
Two and a Half Months Earlier
Cameron and Daniel ended up staying at Cam’s parents’ longer than they originally planned. Cameron just couldn’t bring himself to leave them just yet.
He spent a lot of time in bed during the day and found himself restless at night. One such night two weeks into their stay Cameron walked into the kitchen surprised by the light that was already on. His dad was sitting at the kitchen table in the wheelchair he used in the house when he wasn’t wearing his prosthetic legs.
Cameron sat down hard in the chair next to his dad. He was out of breath just walking down the hall.
“When do you plan on going back home?” His father asked him.
Cameron’s head came up looking startled. He sighed. “I don’t know yet.”
“You’ll know it when the time comes,” his dad said.
“I don’t know that I should,” Cameron said.
“Your mother won’t be happy about it, but she’ll understand eventually. You have to do things on your own terms,” Frank gave the back of his son’s hand a squeeze.
