Unfortunately it's nothing new in TV. Too often I've seen shows use an able bodied actor to play a paralyzed character and then find ways of getting around it using some made up device to cure it. I hated what they ended up doing with Dark Angel's character Logan. He got this device to wear that basically had him looking as if he was no longer a paraplegic.
I read an article in a magazine about a year ago talking about a lot of actors who are quadriplegic or paraplegic and how difficult it is to find work.
I once watched a soap opera Port Charles. It was a spinoff of General Hospital. I watched it only because of an actor in it who is paraplegic. His character was a doctor and he had a romantic relationship with a woman.
