Series: Family Ties
A/N: I don’t think Col. Reynolds has ever been given a first name so Dan is my creation. I know it’s just a shortening of Daniel but I think life we sometimes meet others with the same name as ours or more than one person with the same name
It was Monday and Cam was sitting in the mess eating lunch, when he noticed someone move next to him out of the corner of his eye.
“Cameron, I noticed you all alone here,” it was Vala.
Cam gave an internal sigh. “Vala,” he did his best cheerful voice. “Something I can do for you?”
“Actually I was wondering if there was anything I could do for you,” she said in usual flirtatious tone.
Cam gave her a sideways glance. “Not likely,” he said under his breath.
“Colonel Mitchell,” ah Teal’c thank god, Cam thought.
“Hey big guy, what’s up?” Cam asked.
For the next few minutes Cam was distracted from his previous thoughts about Joey. The teen had been increasingly difficult the last few days. He wished Daniel were home, he’d know what to say to Joey.
Sam came over a few minutes later. “So, how’s it going?” She asked Cam.
“Peachy,” Cam replied. “Joey’s not talking to me and Tracy’s just miserable.”
Sam grimaced in sympathy. “Would you like to come to our house Friday night with the kids? We’re having a cookout. Joey can invite a friend so he’ll have someone his own age there. You’re all invited,” she said to her teammates.
“Yeah,” Cam said. “It’d be good to get out of the house. Joey’s been staying home most of the time not hanging out with any friends and Tracy wants to stick close to him so she doesn’t spend anytime with her friends either.”
They chatted some more before a meeting beckoned.
SB
“Cameron,” Tracy came into the living room where Cam was sitting reading the newspaper. It was Wednesday night.
“Yeah, honey?” Cam put down the paper and pulled Tracy onto his lap.
“Did Daniel send a letter this week?” She asked.
“Not yet baby,” he said. “I know it’s been awhile since we’ve heard from him but it’s not always easy getting a message through from where he is.”
“Joey won’t play with me anymore,” she said suddenly.
“I’m sorry Tracy,” Cam hugged her. “Would it be okay if I played with you?”
“Okay,” she slid off his lap. They walked together upstairs.
SB
Twenty minutes later Cameron came downstairs to answer the door. “More math homework?” He asked when he opened the front door to Jack standing outside.
“Yep,” Jack said smirking.
“What?” Cameron asked.
Jack just pointed to Cam’s head.
“Oh,” Cam touched his head. “I forgot about those,” he started pulling out the colorful barrettes Tracy had stuck in his hair when he started playing with her. “Tracy and I were playing beauty shop,” Jack just nodded. “Like your girls have never done it to you before.”
“Point,” Jack conceded. “So, where’s Joey?”
“Sulking in his bedroom,” Cam said.
Jack grimaced.
SB
It was around lunch time on Friday when Cam received a call from the principal at Joey’s school.
“Is everything okay?” Sam asked when Cam shut off his phone.
“No, Joey got into a fight at school. Although it hadn’t reached fisty-cuffs before it was stopped. The principal wants to see me.”
Cameron got up from his chair in the mess and headed towards the locker room to change into street clothes.
SB
The ride home was in silence. Joey sat in the passenger’s seat with his arms folded across his chest while he contemplated the floor of the car.
When they got into the house Cameron spoke. “Joey, what’s going on? You’ve always been so level headed and never gotten into a fight before.”
“They’re just a bunch of jerks there,” Joey shrugged dropping down onto the couch.
“What about your friends?” Cam sat down next to Joey.
“What friends?” Joey asked.
“The friends you’ve had since Junior High,” Cameron said.
“Those are the jerks,” Joey shot up off the couch and stomped upstairs.
Cameron sat back against the couch wondering what he was supposed to do next.
SB
It took a lot of cajoling and a little bit of ordering to get Joey to come with Cam and Tracy to Jack and Sam’s house.
“Why didn’t you let him bring a friend with him?” Sam asked about Joey.
“He doesn’t have any friends apparently,” Cam sighed.
“I don’t understand,” Sam said.
“Neither do I,” Cam watched Joey sitting in a lawn chair alone when Jack came up and sat next to the teen.
SB
Cameron was just getting ready to gather the kids to leave when Jack came up next to him.
“Did you get anything out of him?” He asked Jack.
Jack gave Cam that squint eyed grimace when he was uncomfortable or bothered about something. “I hate to tell you this but I think Joey’s run into some homophobic pricks.”
Cam rubbed the back of his neck. “Great.”
Jack patted Cameron on the shoulder.
SB
Cam knocked on Joey’s door after he had gotten Tracy to bed. “Can I come in?” He asked when the door opened.
Joey waved him in returning to his bed. “Uncle Jack figured it out,” he guessed.
“Yep,” Cam sat down next to Joey. “So, what do you want to do? We could find another school.”
“No,” Joey said.
“No?” Cam looked at the teen.
“I’m not running away,” Joey said.
“You shouldn’t have to deal with this at your age,” Cam said. “It’s not your fault your guardians are two men who are q…”
“It doesn’t matter,” Joey said.
“All right,” Cam sighed. “We’ll talk about this more when Daniel gets home.”
“Cam,” Joey said when his guardian was at the door. “Is Daniel really in South America?”
Cam smiled at how smart this kid was. “I can’t tell you that,” he didn’t want to insult the boy by lying to him, “but I can tell you he’ll be back on Sunday.”
“Okay,” Joey said.
“Goodnight, pal. I love you,” Cam walked back over to the bed and kissed the top of Joey’s head.
Joey gave him a sour look but mumbled an “I love you,” and “goodnight,” as well.
SB
Daniel wasn’t due back until the afternoon when Cam would go to the SGC and pick him up so they went to church first. The kids rushed inside the house. “Hey, no running!” Cam yelled. “Change out of your Sunday clothes,” he followed them at a slower pace.
“Joey, put your sister’s dress in the hamper; I don’t want you trying to wash it yourself this time,” the last time Joey washed one of Tracy’s dresses after she had spilled on it, it was ruined. Tracy wouldn’t speak to Joey for a day after ruining her favorite dress.
Cameron pulled off his tie as he walked into his and Daniel’s bedroom. He frowned seeing the blinds were closed. He was sure he had opened them this morning. He sat on the edge of the bed to remove his shoes when a moan emanated from the other side of the bed.
Cam shot up off the bed turning around. He opened a blind adding some light. “Daniel?”
Daniel was laying flat on his stomach, the sheet covering him just up to the shoulders. His head turned and he blinked at what he could see of Cam. “Hey,” he said hoarsely.
“What are you doing here?” Cam asked looking down at his lover.
“I live here,” Daniel mumbled. “Would you mind kneeling down here?”
Cam realized Daniel had only moved his head. He kneeled down so he was at eye level with Daniel. “Daniel, are you all right?”
“Yeah, I just threw out my back before leaving,” Daniel said.
Cam opened his mouth to speak only to clamp it shut and bite his lips. It took a lot of effort but he just managed not to laugh.
“Laugh it up,” Daniel grumbled.
Cam looked contrite and pressed a light kiss to Daniel’s lips. “How’d you get home?”
“I called Jack,” Daniel said.
“I see,” Cam said.
“Oh quit it Mitchell,” Daniel huffed.
“What?” Cam frowned. They only called each other by their last names anymore when they were annoyed at each other.
“Jealousy does not become you,” Daniel said.
“Cam,” Joey came into the room. “Daniel?” He rushed over to the bed sitting on the edge. When it bounced from his weight Daniel moaned in pain. “Daniel, are you all right?”
“He’s fine,” Cam assured Joey. “He just threw out his back.”
“How’d you do that?” Joey asked.
“Yeah,” Cam followed along. “How did it happen?”
“It’s a long story,” Daniel said. “I’m just glad to be home. Where’s Tracy?”
“Cameron, I need help,” Tracy stood at the entrance of the room tangled up in her dress. Her arms were sticking up and she could hardly see where she was going.
“I got it,” Joey got up to rescue his sister.
Cam looked over at Joey mouthing a ‘thank you’ to him.
When the kids were out of the room Cam went on the other side of the bed. “Would it hurt too much if I lie down next to you?”
“Just be careful,” Daniel said.
Cam was careful. Resting on his side he placed a hand on Daniel’s back giving it a light rub.
“So, how was the last three weeks?” Daniel asked.
“Long,” Cam said. “We’ve got some things to talk about regarding Joey, but we can talk about those things later,” Daniel looked worried. “It’ll be okay.”
“I don’t think I’m going to go off on a long trip like this again,” Daniel said.
Cam just smiled at Daniel leaning in for another kiss. “We missed you too.”
“Daniel!” Tracy squealed running into the room with Joey close behind. The teen grabbed his little sister just before she bounded on the bed. He then carried her over to his side of the bed leveling her to where he could see her.
“Joey said you throwed out your back,” she looked confused. “Did you get a new one?”
They chuckled at her but she took no offense and giggled giving Daniel a kiss on the cheek.
