“Hey Sam,” Daniel entered the mess after spending an hour in the infirmary being poked and prodded having returned from ascension yet again a little over an hour earlier. Getting closer he rolled his eyes and with his index finger flicked Sam’s hand away from her eyes. “Funny, I’m dressed now thank you very much.”

Sam looked over at him grinning. “Well I’m glad you’re back,” her expression switched to something more somber.

“Me too,” he smiled sitting down next to her. “Jack told me about Jacob, I’m sorry.”

Sam just nodded looking down at her Jello.

“Jack also said we’re all going on a vacation together whether we like it or not,” Daniel continued.

Sam lifted her head and laughed.

“Uh Sam,” Daniel said after a moment of silence, “you haven’t happened to speak with Colonel Mitchell recently have you?” Daniel hadn’t seen Cam since he left the colonel’s apartment the day of his trip on Prometheus to Atlantis and he had only had a brief chance to talk with him on the phone before things went bad.

“No,” she frowned. “I think I heard he had moved about three weeks ago.”

“Where?” Daniel’s voice was bit sharper than he had intended.

“I don’t know,” she said still frowning. “Why?”

“Sorry,” he said, “I can’t tell you.”

A look of dawning appeared on her face. “And I can’t ask.”

“Something like that,” he grimaced.

“Don’t worry,” she smiled. “Your secret’s safe with me.”

“Thanks,” he breathed out.

“I can do some looking,” she said.

“Huh?” He looked confused.

“For Mitchell,” she explained.

“Uh well, I don’t know,” he said.

“Well, let me know,” she smiled as she stood up. “Come on, we’ve got a meeting.”

“Right,” he got up following her.

“Oh when we find somewhere more private, I want details,” she smirked up at him.

Daniel stood stunned for a moment before gathering himself and followed Sam the rest of the way.

Daniel entered his apartment later that night. The meeting they had involved a video of –them- apparently. An alternate version apparently went to Giza back thousands of years ago and found a ZPM. They left it for them in the present to find.

Daniel shook his head; he didn’t have the energy for confusion of alternate realities and time traveling. He crossed the room to his answering machine and pushed play. Most of them were from Cam wondering if he was available to do something. The last couple of messages were just telemarketers.

Daniel slumped down on the couch and debated whether or not to try to call Cam again and finally decided against it for now. He needed sleep; tomorrow Jack would be dragging them to his cabin.

Daniel pulled the strap of his bag over his shoulder and entered the living room. Jack was standing in the middle of the room waiting impatiently on him.

“Ready?” Jack beamed.

“Yep,” Daniel replied.

“Could you at least try to dig up some enthusiasm,” Jack griped.

“Sorry,” Daniel mumbled.

It was the first night of the team’s vacation. Daniel sneaked out of the cabin to get a breath of fresh air. He’d been sitting in a chair looking up at the stars. He sometimes looked up at the sky imagining he could see Abydos.

“Daniel.”

Daniel was startled out of his thoughts and looked over his shoulder to see Sam approaching him.

“Come to get details?” Daniel smiled.

Sam pulled up a chair next to Daniel and sat down. “Do you get the feeling things are about to change?” Sam asked.

“Do you know something I don’t?” Daniel frowned looking at his friend.

“Well, Teal’c is spending more time on Dakara and I talked to Cassie yesterday,” Sam paused.

“Is everything okay with Cassie?” Daniel asked.

“She’s struggling a little at school.” Cassie was out of state away from everyone she knew. “I’m thinking of visiting her for a little while.”

Daniel nodded. He had to admit he was feeling a bit restless. This thing with Cameron Mitchell was –well he didn’t really know what it was.

“So what was that about details?”

Daniel was startled again out of his thoughts. He had to think about what Sam had just said and what she meant. When he realized what she was talking about he shook his head and smiled in amusement.

For the most part the trip had been uneventful. But the day before they were to return to civilization Jack had an announcement. Within a month he would be leaving the SGC to go to Washington D.C. to be head of Home World security. General Hammond would be retiring soon and someone needed to take his place.

The day after they returned from their vacation Teal’c had left for Dakara and Sam announced she was taking a position at Area 51. It allowed her to still work within the Stargate program and be closer to Cassie.

Daniel without an official team went off world a few times with other teams for archeological digs for the next three weeks.

Eventually it was time for Jack to leave for Washington D.C. He and Daniel went out to dinner the night before Jack was to leave.

They had come back from the restaurant O’Malley’s where they had been tossed out four years ago because of these armbands the ToK’ra gave them. It was a couple of years before the team was allowed to return to the restaurant.

They were just getting back to Daniel’s apartment where Jack had picked Daniel up to go to the restaurant.

Daniel got out of the car and was followed by Jack into his apartment.

“You know the Daedalus will be back in a week from Atlantis,” Jack said.

Daniel turned and looked at his friend. “Yeah, I think I heard that.” He looked at Jack waiting for his point.

“And it’ll be returning to Atlantis in a month.” Daniel could hear the ‘duh’ in Jack’s tone.

“That’s nice,” Daniel retrieved a beer from his refrigerator offering Jack one.

Jack waved his hand turning down the beer and huffed. “Do you wanna go to Atlantis or what?”

Daniel pointed at his chest raising his eyebrows. “Oh you’re letting me go?”

Jack rolled his eyes. “Yeah well let’s just hope you don’t run into that Vala whoever person again. Oh and you’re not allowed to go all glowy again.”

Daniel leaned against the kitchen doorway and smirked.

“So are you still picking me up tomorrow to take me to the airport?”

“Yes Jack,” Daniel said patiently.

“Well, are you gonna go?” Jack was about to head out.

“I’ll have to think about it,” Daniel replied.

“You have to think about it now?” Jack stopped at the threshold.

“Yes,” was all Daniel would say as he let Jack give him a quick hug before he left.

Daniel gave it a couple days to think about. Thoughts of Cameron would come up once in awhile. He hadn’t heard anything from or about the other man in several weeks. He liked Cameron and wondered if he hadn’t left on that first attempted trip to Atlantis and then suddenly ascended shortly after if they’d still be seeing each other.

He shook his head for his office to finish packing away some things. He accepted it was over.

“Dr. Jackson,” Daniel was just passing General Landry’s office when he heard his name. It was the general waving him into his office.

The new General seemed like a decent man, if a little stubborn. But then Jack recommended him for the job so Daniel really shouldn’t have been surprised.

Daniel entered the general’s office. The room was in a bit of disarray as the new head of the SGC was still unpacking his things and making the office his own.

“General,” Daniel stepped closer to the desk, arms folded across his chest.

“Dr. Jackson,” the older man said. “I have just been informed that a Lt Colonel Cameron Mitchell will be arriving tomorrow to take the position of leader of SG-1.”

Daniel did his best to school his expression. “Um does he know there is no SG-1 anymore?”

Several thoughts went through Daniel’s mind in a very short amount of time. Why was Cameron coming to the SGC and taking over leadership that doesn’t even exist anymore?

“Dr. Jackson, the designation does no cease to exist just because its original members are gone,” Landry said. “It’s not a football jersey.”

“So he’ll be putting together his own team then,” Daniel said.

“Unless you want to rejoin,” Landry said.

“Uh no, no that’s all right. I’m still planning on leaving for Atlantis in two days,” Daniel said.

SB

Daniel had a difficult sleep that night. He called Sam as soon as he got back to his apartment.

“He’s taking over leadership of SG-1,” Daniel had said without preamble as soon as he had Sam on the line.

“Well, hello Daniel. I’m fine and how are you?” Sam replied.

“Sorry,” Daniel said.

“Who is taking over SG-1?” She asked.

“Cameron,” Daniel said. “He’ll be arriving tomorrow.”

“And you’ll be leaving on the Prometheus the day after,” Sam said.

“Yeah,” Daniel breathed out. “God this is ridiculous, I feel like a teenager.”

“Well, what do you want?” Sam asked.

“I don’t know. I haven’t heard from him in weeks. I have no idea where he’s been.”

“I’d guess he felt the same while you were busy being ascended.”

“Yeah,” Daniel grimaced.

“So talk to him,” Sam nudged.

“Yeah okay,” Daniel said.

“Daniel, I gotta go.”

“Okay, thanks,” he smiled.

“Call me before you leave if you decide to,” she said.

“I will,” he promised before hanging up.
