I watched the pilot episode of the new Syfy series 12 Monkeys based on the 1990's movie of the same name. I never saw the original movie so I have nothing which to judge the series against.

Basically Cole is sent from the year 2043 where an epidemic wiped out 90% of Earth's population to first 2013. He comes into contact with Cassandra, a virologist. They have a brief encounter and he tells her to meet him at a certain place exactly two years from where they are at.

When they first meet in 2013 he is hiding in her car and she tells her then boyfriend to call the police. Before Cole disappears before her eyes he is shot in the side by the police.

Two years later he appears with the same bullet wound. She treats is wound and is unconscious for three days. She no longer practices medicine because the incident of two years earlier causes her to lose her reputation.

He tells her they need to find the man responsible for the virus that wipes out 90% of the population in the future. By the end of the episode Cole has killed this man, but when he goes back to his own time nothing has changed.

So now it looks like there are more people involved in this virus who have the power to keep it going forward.

The plot is interesting. It looks like a pretty standard story where you have at least two heroes and every episode they'll likely run into something they need to accomplish by the end of the episode on their way to solve the answer to the virus. One step forward, two steps back or however you would like to put it.

So far the two leads are pretty basic. Hopefully there will be a bit more of an expansion of them because while it has an intriguing plot, if the characters don't interest me the show won't interest me.

It definitely has potential.
Unfortunately, I have noticed that high concept shows like that tend to get cancelled in the first season (Flashforward, John Doe).
