Ark, ship, SGA

I have all these thoughts on fandom, SGA, ship, The Ark and...well that's it I think. Oh yeah Elizabeth Weir. I'm just not sure where to start.
LJ cuts are mostly for space and in case you don’t want to read all of my ramblings. But the Ark cut is for spoilers for that ep.
I think I'll start with Ship: Okay I'm not a big shipper. I usually go into a show assuming there's going to be some UST between two characters of the male and female persuasion. I expect some flirting and hints, but that's about it. If the show is one that will write an actual relationship I may like it I may not depending how it's written (but that would be a given.
There are times when I just don't want a canon relationship e.g. X-Files. I didn't want ship between Mulder and Scully. I thought the relationship they had was perfect in the first five years of the show and then they started pushing ship in season six and things started going downhill imo. There was a part of me that did want them together, but I was able to satisfy that part with fanfiction.
Now on to SGA & Ship: I really, really, really do not want a canon ship. While I like Shep/Weir I mostly got interested because I knew it was inevitable there would be some ship on some level so I might as well look for a pair I like.
I am really happy with all the character interactions we’ve had in season three. I am not always thinking ‘OMG, Sheppard and Weir are in a scene together they’re so in lurve,’ sigh. Nor am I always thinking ‘OMG Sheppard and Teyla are in a scene together the ptb are screwing with us’.
AS a matter of fact I’d like to see more screen time between Sheppard and Teyla. TPTB should have worked a lot harder with their relationship in the past because now it just feels like we’re getting hit on the head with anvils every time they’re in a scene together and I am really trying to get away from thinking that when they are in scenes together.
Sheppard, McKay and Weir are my favorite characters on SGA in that order. I’m an unusual shipper for Shep/Weir because most have Weir as their favorite character while mine is Sheppard and in fact she’s my third and not even second favorite character. I really like any of these three characters in any combinations of interactions on the show.
Elizabeth Weir: She is a great character in concept. There are even some SGA writers who can do a good job writing her. The thing is, and I’ve said it elsewhere, I don’t think these writers could negotiate themselves out of a paper bag. Why should we then think they could write a character who is supposed to be a great negotiator?
The Ark: Spoilers It wasn’t a horrible episode, but I found it lacking. And while it’s unfortunate that it was an episode that could not give Elizabeth much to do I really don’t think it was a lack of Elizabeth that was the problem (at least not for me). I feel the weakness of the episode and the lack of Elizabeth are somewhat separate issues in that I don’t think more of a presence from her would have fixed the problems of this episode.
I think they had a good idea, but I felt very little emotion for the one thousand people in stasis or even for team Sheppard. It had some good moments. I liked the understanding from Ronon toward Herick. Ronon knows what it’s like to be betrayed by someone you trust and lose loved ones because of that person you trusted the same way Jamus betrayed Herick causing the death of Herick’s family.
Lorne. That is all :D
I get what others have said about ‘great another suicide mission from Sheppard’. I don’t think anyone is complaining they had Sheppard saving Teyla specifically. I do think it’s a matter of each main character’s name is in a column and Sheppard’s name is to the left and TPTB are checking off everyone’s name so they have a turn at Sheppard’s rescues. [sarcasm]Wouldn’t want to leave anyone out of being rescued or we might think John doesn’t really lurve them. *rollseyes*
I liked the last scene. The copy I got had a couple lines that cut out so I didn’t hear everything that was said here as well as a few lines in earlier parts of the episode. But like I said I liked the last scene. I suppose you could take it as Shep/Teyla anvils or the end of ship possibilities for them, but I just thought it was cute. And it was nice to see Elizabeth sitting on the edge of Teyla’s bed when John came into the infirmary. Elizabeth asking him if he came to get his head examined was terrific too.
All in all it was an okay episode, but lacking a little in heart.
I also understand the over doing with the whole family love thing. I think TPTB have a tendency to over compensate when something has been seriously lacking. They’ll take it to an extreme making it look over done. It’s the same when they feel they did something and want to remove it. Like they had commented that Sheppard and Weir conflicting wasn’t working and people didn’t like it, but there’s like no conflict between them and that’s just not realistic. There’s got to be the occasional disagreement. TPTB are a bit too much all or nothing a lot of the time.
Sigh, I feel better.
