John was walking down one of the halls in Atlantis having just finished talking with Colonel Carter. He was serious when he told her they would find Elizabeth.

He was just coming upon an open door to one of the many balconies on the city when he heard glass breaking.

He looked out the door seeing Rodney standing at the railing. John could just see his friend’s profile and left hand holding something up above his head. A light hit the object in his hand and John could see what Rodney was holding.

Rodney’s raised hand pulled back as if he was about to throw something and John rushed out grabbing Rodney’s hand keeping it gripped around the object.

“Rodney, you don’t want to throw that,” John said.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Rodney asked as he managed to shake himself out of his stupor.

John pried it out of Rodney’s hand and looked at it. “What the hell were you thinking?” John smacked the back of Rodney’s head.

“Oww!” Rodney rubbed the injured spot on his head.

“This is Elizabeth’s shot glass,” John held up the little glass.

“How can you tell?” Rodney asked. “How do you even know she has a shot glass?”

“The lipstick,” John pointed to the faint mark on the lip of the glass. “And she told me you, Carson and she got together occasionally to have a drink of scotch out here.”

“Oh,” Rodney slumped to the floor of the balcony leaning his back to side wall.

“You didn’t throw the others did you? Because I heard glass breaking just before I came in,” John sat down next to Rodney still holding the glass.

“No,” Rodney said. “I threw the bottle of scotch over the side though.”

“That was a waste of good scotch, but at least you didn’t break these,” John pulled the other two glasses sitting in a small box between them.

“You wanna go watch a movie with Teyla, Ronon and me?” John asked.

“No, I should see Katie,” Rodney said. “I haven’t talked to her in a couple of days.”

“I’m sure she’ll understand,” John said. “You’ve been kinda busy lately what with saving the city and all,” John turned to look away from Rodney biting his lower lip.

“Yeah, and not saving Elizabeth,” Rodney said.

John took a deep breath and looked back at Rodney. “Don’t.”

Rodney released a mirthless laugh. “That’s what Ronon said to me after Carson died.”

“He was right,” John said.

Rodney raised an eyebrow at John. “Maybe you should take your own advice.”

When John avoided his gaze and didn’t respond, Rodney stood up. “It’s getting late. I should go talk to Katie before it gets any later.”

“Things are going okay with you two?” John asked from his spot on the floor.

“Yeah,” Rodney sounded almost surprised.

“Good,” John said and Rodney opened his mouth to say something. “Go on,” John made a shooing motion.

Rodney frowned and shook his head before turning toward the door. “See you later.”

John was left still holding Elizabeth’s shot glass. Rodney had left the rest of them sitting next to John. Holding the glass up, he brought it to his lips pressing them up against the stain of lipstick. He stayed there still holding the glass in that position long after Rodney had left.
