I have what is probably an odd question. What is this obsession with penguins in the Stargate fandom? I've seen it from all quarters of the fandom for fans of both shows and of various ships. It's just something I've seen occasionally.

I've been wondering the same!

Also, I'm wondering why everyone loves vampire fics.

You mean like making a character in an SGA fic a vampire? That I don't know. I'm not a fan of making characters into vampires when the show has nothing to do with vampires. Although I am a fan of a few vampire TV shows. I'm not sure I can give you a solid reason for why I like those shows though. I'll have to think about that.

Jumping in here to say that I've never really got the whole idea of vampire fic either...Vampire anything has never really appealed to me actually, BUT the other day I read a Jack/Ianto fic where Ianto is a vampire, because one of my fave fanfic writers wrote it and OMG it was soooo good.
Still can't see the appeal of vampire fic for most fandoms, but it definitely worked in this case and it was damn hot as well ;)

With regards to Atlantis > Sparky/Sheyla, Conversion may have contributed to the whole vampire fic thing.

Or it may be as simple as, Vampires Are Made Of Hot, so let's stick it to our fandom. :P

I think it's the whole vampires are hot so let's stick into our fandom. :D

The vampire shows I've watched had some hot vampires. Of course I think they were just really hot guys who happen to be vampires. :D

LOL. The only vamp shows I've watched are Buffy and Angel. And Sanctuary, if that counts. But I have to say, James Marsters is WAY hotter as Spike than himself, lol (maybe I just like the leather, lol)

I've never watched much Buffy or Angel. Just never got into it for some reason.

The Sanctuary Vamps are creepy and ugly.

The last vampire show I watched was not a big success and I haven't found too many who liked it. Moonlight.

I like it when shows have different takes on vampires. Moonlight had a very different take on vampires than the usual.

I'm pretty sure it's a Sam/Jacks shipper thing, and if other groups are using it now, it probably evolved from that. I'm not sure exactly what it's about but I think it has something to do with the penguins being like defenders of Sam/Jack.

Interesting. While I'd seen comments about penguins over the last couple of years in various ship pairs and such I just never asked until yesterday when I was trying to figure out why there were at least three Sam/Jack ship threads on GW. I was looking at the first post of one of the threads and saw a mention of penguins so I was reminded of it and decided to ask finally.

I still don't know why there are two active Sam/Jack threads, but whatever. I thread was apparently started a couple years ago because the Sam/Jack shippers weren't all getting along but it hasn't been active awhile.

It definately goes back further than that with Sam/Jack. I started browsing GW about 2004 and it was a 'thing' then. :)

It was a Sam/Jack thing

Because of the S1 episode where they end up in the Antarctic (or whatever the hell it is) and it's the first "shipper" moment of them.. Penguins live only on Antarctica.. So sheesh, that would make it late 90's early 2000/2001-ish that it started up. It may also have had to do with the penguin slapping the other penguin down sort of randomly- that icon started coming 'round back in the day..

Also, it's the name of the group of round robin fic writers that wrote Sam&Jack back in the day- Team Penguin.
