Prompt: Trapped, Gen, PG

“Come on, Carson,” John whined from the infirmary bed. The previous day while off world helping an evacuation, John had broken his leg. It was bad enough he had needed surgery and the cast had gone well above his knee making it impossible to walk on.
An earthquake had started prompting the evacuation. The quake had revealed hidden treasures- at least they were treasures to Rodney. Things had settled down on the planet and Rodney wanted to go back to check things out. Elizabeth’s curiosity was also piqued when Rodney filled her in on what he knew and that he needed help with translations.
Carson turned away from his work to look at John. “Colonel, I’ve already told you I want you to stay here for another day and after that you will be using a wheelchair.”
John sagged against the pillow behind him. The rest of his team and Elizabeth were on that planet, who knew what could happen. He glared at his leg.
“Glaring it into submission isn’t going to heal that leg any faster.”
John startled when Carson spoke while his back was turned to John. “Growing eyes in the back of your head?”
Carson swiveled around once more grinning. “No, I’ve seen you do that several times all morning long. Now, how about some lunch?”
“Yeah, okay,” John grumbled.
SB
John dozed off after lunch having taken some pain killers. Some time later something stirred him awake. Cracking open his eyes he saw Teyla walk by his field of vision. He wasn’t sure, but he thought she was holding something over her forehead. Before he could make heads or tails out of that Ronon appeared. He seemed to be holding his arm in an odd way.
John blinked several times and shook his head slightly, a painful process because his head hurt from the concussion he also suffered.
“Hey, what’s going on?” He asked the general room.
Teyla started to walk up to John only to be stopped by a nurse. She put up her hand asking the nurse for a moment.
John could see a trickle of dried blood peeking out from under a bandage she was holding on her forehead.
“Teyla, what the hell is going on? Are you all right?” John looked her over seeing if he could spot anymore injuries.
“John, I’m fine. It is nothing more than a concussion.”
That didn’t make him feel better. “How did you get that concussion?”
She hesitated a moment and that was enough to get him thinking and asking something else. “Where are Rodney and Elizabeth?”
“John, there was a tremor on the planet. Rodney and Elizabeth were standing at the entrance of the cave,” she hesitated for a moment.
“Teyla,” John was unconsciously pushing himself up as if to get off the bed.
“John,” Teyla grabbed John’s shoulder pushing back against the pillow.
John startled and realized how close he was to falling off the bed. “Teyla, please.”
“We do not know. Rodney tried to push Elizabeth out of the cave, but she was further in than Rodney. It all happened so fast. Ronon moved forward to do something, but broke his arm in the process,” she squeezed his wrist. “Major Lorne is on the planet leading the rescue operation and Carson is there with his team.”
John pushed himself up until he was sitting up straight. “I need a radio.”
Teyla surprised him and pulled out another ear bud. “I gathered you would want to keep in contact with the control room.”
“Thanks, now go get that taken care of,” he pointed at her forehead. Teyla nodded and smiled before leaving with a nurse.
SB
John had contacted Chuck in the control room and told him to let him know when Lorne reported in next so he could speak with the Major himself. It was almost an hour later when Lorne had finally called in.
“Major, what’s your status?”
“It’s going slowly, Sir. The area is not very stable and we’ve experienced a few more tremors.”
John dropped his head back against his pillow. “Have you heard anything at all from Drs. Weir or McKay?”
“No Sir. I’m sorry.”
“All right, keep me posted.”
Ronon appeared with a cast going up just below his elbow. He sat down on the edge of the bed next to John’s. “Heard anything?”
“Nothing new to report,” John said. “So how’s the arm?” He pointed in the general direction of Ronon’s broken arm.
Ronon shrugged. “I’ve had worse,” he stood up then.
“Where ya going?” John asked.
“See if I can help out.”
“No you are not,” Teyla appeared holding a tray of food. Someone behind her was carrying another tray loaded with food. They placed the trays down, one on John’s bed and the other on the bed Ronon was just occupying. Teyla thanked the person who brought the other tray before turning back to pin a look on Ronon.
The Satedan scowled, but sat down anyway.
John watched this with great amusement. Teyla was not someone you wanted to piss off. He grimaced suddenly feeling the pain return and a reminder of what was happening on another planet. He took a moment to glare at his leg once more.
SB
It was late in the evening when John spoke to Lorne for the third time since this whole thing happened. Ronon and Teyla had returned to their quarters a short time earlier.
“Sir, we heard a muffled voice from the other side of the rubble,” Lorne told him.
“Could you make out what was said?” John asked sitting up straighter.
“Negative, Sir.”
“All right,” John sighed. He was about to say something when Lorne swore a few times. “Lorne?” There was no response other than some static. “Major!”
“Sorry Sir, I’ll have to get back to you, there was another tremor.”
“What about…?”
“I don’t know yet, Sir. I really need…”
“All right, go ahead.”
When John finished talking with the Major he looked around trying to think of a way to get out of his bed. He got as far as putting his leg down and his foot on the floor when a nurse walked up to him.
“Colonel, what do you think you’re doing?” She asked.
“Just thought I’d stretch my legs?” He tried to give her his best charming smile.
“Uh huh,” she pulled his good leg back up onto the bed and he grimaced. “I think it’s time for your pain meds.”
“I’m fine,” John insisted. He hadn’t let on his leg had started hurting a few hours earlier during dinner and now the pain was worse. The medication would just knock him out. “Ow,” he yelped when his injured leg was jostled.
“Colonel,” the nurse protested.
“No,” John spoke through gritted teeth.
“All right,” the nurse said before leaving him alone.
“Colonel Sheppard, this is Major Lorne,” John’s pain was forgotten for the moment.
“What is it, Major?” John pressed his hand to his ear as if to keep out every other sound other than Lorne’s voice needing to know how his friends were.
“We’re just getting them out. Dr. McKay looks to be unconscious and Dr. Weir is just barely conscious. We should be back with them in about twenty minutes, Sir.”
“Good job Major. I’ll see you when you get back,” he cut the conversation and pressed his face into his pillow. Just a little longer. He had to stay awake a little longer.
Taking a deep breath he could feel the pain in his leg subsiding a little. He rested back against the pillows. His eyes were heavy so he thought he’d just close them for a minute.
SB
John’s eyes snapped open. He grabbed his watch to check the time. He swore when he read the time. It was morning.
He opened his mouth to yell at someone only to hear voices near him. Turning his head to the right he stared for a moment. “Elizabeth?”
Elizabeth slowly turned her head towards him. She had a bandage covering most over her forehead. A few scrapes were scattered over her face and her left arm was in a sling.
Teyla was sitting in a chair next to Elizabeth’s bed.
“John, how are you feeling?” Elizabeth asked.
“I should be asking you that question,” he said raising an eyebrow.
“Sprained wrist, a few cuts and bruises and a concussion,” she said.
“Another concussion,” John mused. “Where’s Rodney?” He winced when his head jerked coming off the pillow.
“He is in recovery,” Teyla said.
“He suffered some internal injuries,” Elizabeth said. John could see the weariness in Elizabeth’s eyes as she spoke. “He was caught under a pile of rubble. He had lost consciousness not long after the cave in.”
“He’ll be fine,” John insisted.
Elizabeth gave him a tired smile and nodded.
Ronon arrived just as Carson came out with some nurses bringing Rodney out.
“Here’s our boy,” John grinned when he heard Rodney grunt looking over at John with eyes half open. They got Rodney settled into his bed on the other side of John. The scientist looked pail and warn, but he was alive and conscious enough to glare at John.
“Well Colonel, I hear you’ve been giving my staff a hard time in my absence,” Carson turned from Rodney’s side to look at John.
John found himself being stared at by five pairs of eyes. “You know, I wouldn’t mind some pain killers right about now.”
