Daniel pushed Cameron down the hall of their apartment building in a wheelchair. Dr. Lam followed in silence looking anything but pleased. She strongly disagreed with this, but there was nothing she could do about it. So she gathered what medical supplies she could and followed them back to the apartment.
Jack was driving Cameron’s parents to the apartment and would be there in a few minutes. The rest of the team would be arriving soon as well.
They entered the apartment and went into the bedroom. Daniel pulled back the blankets and went over next to Cameron. “All right, ready to get into bed?” Cameron just nodded. Daniel wrapped Cam’s arm around his neck. He wrapped his right arm around Cameron’s back and the other under his legs. With all the weight Cameron had lost in the last few months he was quite a bit lighter. He put Cameron down on the bed tucking the blankets up to his waist.
“Need anything?” Daniel asked Cameron.
“No,” Cameron whispered.
Dr. Lam moved over and checked on him taking his vitals. When she was finished Daniel walked her out to the living room.
“How is the research going?” Daniel asked.
“We might have something by the end of the week,” she said. “But don’t get your hopes up. The notes from Councilor Nevil are difficult to understand.”
Daniel nodded and walked her to the door.
“Call me if anything changes,” she said.
“You too,” he said.
Two Months Earlier
Daniel was looking out the back window of the Mitchell house. Cameron was napping in a Chez lounge in the back yard. Daniel’s phone rang then. He took a look out who was calling him and answered it. “Hey Sam, what’s up?”
“We think we may have something,” she said.
“What?” He clutched his phone harder. “How, who, where?”
“PX-978,” she said. “Governor Trailin told us there was an attempt on his life. One of his servants who was originally from PX-998 tried to poison him.”
Daniel knew there was something about PX-998 he didn’t like. “Wait a second, PX-978 and PX-998 used to be trading partners.”
“Exactly,” Sam said. “PX-978 pulled out of their trading agreement about six months ago. That left PX-998 very unstable. A lot of people suffered for it. But PX-998 was to blame for PX-978 pulling out. Chancellor Cristoff has publically put the blame on Governor Trailin however. The servant was working on his own trying to get revenge for the suffering of his family.”
“How do we know this has anything to do with what happened to Cameron?” Daniel asked.
“The servant was caught and questioned by Governor Trailin and he found out the servant had tried before only to have an offworlder drink the poison instead,” Sam explained.
“Was he able to get the antidote from the servant?” Daniel asked.
There was a pause before Sam answered. “The servant tried to escape and was killed before they could get any information out of him.”
“Damn it!” Daniel wanted to hit something.
“They did however find writing they think has to do with the making of the poison in the servant’s quarters. Governor Trailin is letting his best scientists work with ours.”
Daniel brushed a hand through his hair. “Okay. Thanks Sam.”
“Do you know when you’ll be back?” She asked.
Daniel looked back out the window where Cameron was still sleeping. “Soon,” he said.
When he hung up the phone he heard footsteps. Looking over his shoulder he saw Frank entering. “Trouble?” He asked.
“Hopefully something good,” Daniel said. “They think they’re making some progress on finding a drug.”
Daniel looked at Frank. He had a feeling the older man suspected there was much more he wasn’t telling, but that he understood.
SB
Daniel sat down in the chez next to Cameron. His lover opened his eyes and smiled at him. He stuck out his hand and Daniel grabbed hold of it. “I think it’s time to go home,” Cameron said.
