Has anyone stopped watching a long running show long before the series has ended and when the series finale premieres watched it?
I watched the series finale of ER tonight. I haven't watched it regularly for about eight years. I quit after they killed off Mark Greene. I'm not at all familiar with the present cast. I recognize a few actors but I know really nothing about the characters. But I watched it for the cast of characters from the early years who had returned for the final episode.
While I wasn't familiar with the other characters I still was able to enjoy them. Ernest Borgnine was in the episode. I didn't even know he was still alive. He was heart breaking in the episode. His character's wife was ill and eventually dies in the episode while in the ER. They had known each other for 72 years having met in the sixth grade.
Dr. John Carter who was the intern way back at the beginning of the series was opening a free clinic and several of the characters from the early days had come to the opening of his clinic.
I think Carter's relationship with Dr. Peter Benton has always been the most interesting one of the series to me. Benton is more laid back and not so focused on just himself. Carter has matured a lot and is confident. And there's a respect and even growing friendship between them now.
Kerrie was there. I don't know what happened to her last I had watched it, but she's now walking without a cane. Susan was there as well.
Elizabeth Corday was in town with Mark Greene's daughter Rachel from his first marriage. His daughter is 22 now and a med student.
They went out to dinner after Carter's clinic opening and then he, Rachel and Susan went off to the ER to see thoes they hadn't seen in awhile.
The last scene was of all the doctors standing outside the ER waiting for several injured in an explosion. There's this great shot of the emergency vehicles outside the ER and the doctors each going to someone injured and the camera pulls back as the theme music is playing showing a wide shot of the El above them and the entrance to the ER. I got a little nostalgic at that point.
While it's been a long time since I really watched it, it's hard to believe it's over.
