The next couple of weeks were blissfully mundane. They had gone off world a few times and not a single mishap was had.

“Did you get the movers called?” Daniel asked from their bedroom while he packed a bag for their trip to Kansas.

“Yep,” Cam stuck his head in the bedroom. “They’re scheduled for Monday morning. Are you ready?”

“Yeah,” Daniel picked up his bag and carried it out to the living room.

They would be stopping off at Jack and Sam’s house first. They were also borrowing Jack’s SUV. Sam had been out of the hospital for a week now and was taking it easy.

Teal’c and Vala would be there as well to see Daniel and Cam off. They decided to drive to Kansas.

“Think we could just use the Asgard beaming technology to get to my parents and back?” Cam asked walking up to the car.

“Somehow I just don’t think we would get the approval for that,” Daniel said.

“Even if we put in for a request a month ago?” Cam asked.

“No,” Daniel shook his head only to hesitate and eye his lover. “You didn’t try…?”

“No,” Cam rolled his eyes only to then avert them from Daniel. “Actually I just thought of it today.”

Daniel shook his head but grinned. “Are you sure we want to drive though?”

“Do you know what it would take to bring a dog on an airplane?” Cam asked as he pulled out of the parking lot. “I don’t think I could do that to Joey.”

Daniel reached over and squeezed Cam’s arm. They really hadn’t talked about Cam’s cousin and her husband since coming back from Kansas over a month ago.

“I’m okay,” Cam said blinking his eyes a few times.

“I know,” Daniel smiled.

They pulled into the Mitchell property mid afternoon. Daniel nudged Cameron from the driver’s seat. Halfway there Daniel took over the driving.

Cam shook his head to focus and got out of the car after Daniel. They went up to the front porch and knocked once before Cam turned the knob.

“Anyone home?” Cam yelled into the house.

“Cameron,” the pilot’s mother Wendy appeared in the living room. “Daniel,” she gave them a hug and a kiss on their cheeks. “Are you sure driving was such a good idea?”

“Mom, it’s only a few hours drive,” Cam told her. “Where is everybody?”

“Joey’s out back playing with Sam. Your dad’s around here somewhere and Tracy is right over here,” she pointed to the play pin in the living room where Tracy sat playing.

“How are they doing?” Daniel asked.

“Joey still has nightmares occasionally,” Wendy said.

“How are you doing?” Cameron asked.

Wendy swiped a stray tear from her cheek. “Working at it day by day.”

“Cam, Daniel!” Joey shouted running towards them.

“Whoa, slugger,” Cam stopped the boy and pulled him into a hug.

“Cameron, Daniel,” Cam’s dad entered the room. “Good to see you both.”

“Dad,” Cam released Joey over to Daniel and hugged his dad.

“Frank,” Daniel smiled and shook the older man’s hand.

Cam walked over to where Tracy was playing. “Hey Tracy. Remember me?” He picked her up. “Cam.”

“Cam,” she said in her little voice.

“That’s right,” he smiled carrying her over to the others. “You remember Daniel?”

“Dan’l,” she said causing the others to chuckle.

Cameron sagged into the mattress exhausted. “Think we can do this?” He asked his lover next to him.

Daniel pulled Cameron close to him resting his lover’s head on his shoulder. He looked at Cameron. “It’s not going to be easy,” Daniel said.

“Thanks for that pep talk,” Cam grumbled.

Daniel grinned and gave Cam a kiss.

“So, how are you with coming to live with Daniel and me, Joey?” Cameron asked the next day while tossing a baseball with the boy in the back yard.

“Okay,” Joey shrugged his shoulders throwing the ball back.

Cam opened his mouth to say something when the back door opened. Daniel came out with Tracy. She was on the ground while Daniel held both of her hands in front of him. He guided her down the three steps and into the grass.

“She’s getting around,” Cam said kneeling down and taking one of her hands from Daniel.

“Cam,” she said and reached for the ball in his hand.

“What’s this?” Cam asked her.

“Ball,” she said.

“That’s right,” Cam said.

Daniel looked over to Joey, but he was no longer there. He looked around and spied movement near the barn. “You okay with her?” Daniel asked Cameron.

“Yeah,” Cam smiled grateful. Daniel seemed to have a knack for talking with Joey and through to the boy.

“Dan’l go?” Tracy asked when Daniel released her hand and turned to go into the barn.

“He’ll be back,” Cam assured her. “How about you and I play.”

“Play ball,” she said pointing to the baseball.

Cam grinned. “All right,” he took her hand and they walked over to the blanket a few feet away on the grass.

Daniel entered the barn casually, his hands in his pockets. He noticed Joey sitting bail of hay petting his dog. Daniel had a momentary grimace at the thought of the ride home.

“Hey Joey,” he wandered over and sat next to the boy.

“Hey,” Joey said looking at his feet.

“It’s nice here on your aunt and uncle’s farm,” Daniel said.

“I guess,” Joey said.

“I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to stay,” Daniel said.

Joey looked up sharply. “But,” he started but stopped.

“If you wanted to stay I’m sure your aunt and uncle would be happy to have you,” Daniel knew Tracy would be the hardest for Cam’s parents to take care of at this point. Not that an eleven year old would be easy.

“But I can’t stay,” Joey looked like he was about to panic. “Tracy needs me.”

“Okay Joey,” Daniel soothed resting a hand on Joey’s back. “Joey, you know Cameron and I will be there for Tracy and for you. And you don’t need to feel obligated to come with us.”

“I want to come with you,” Joey said. “I’m just…it’s just…” he hesitated.

“You’re kinda scared?” Daniel ventured.

“Kinda,” he looked embarrassed.

“I know it can be scary moving to a new place,” Daniel said. “I felt the same way after my parents died. But you have Cam and me and your sister. And we can come back here and visit your Aunt Wendy and Uncle Frank. There are a few friends of ours who are really excited to meet you and your sister too.”

Daniel waited while he watched Joey mull all this over. He couldn’t help the smile as Joey turned to his dog and speak to him. “What do you think Sam?” The dog turned his face to Joey and licked the boy’s face.

“Eww,” Joey swiped the back of his hand over his cheek. “I’ll take that as a yes,” Joey stated.

Daniel ruffled the boy’s hair before kissing the top of his head. “Are you sure then?” Daniel asked seriously.

“Yeah,” Joey said looking just as serious. “When do we leave?”

“Tomorrow morning,” Daniel said.

“Okay,” Daniel could hear some lingering worry in Joey’s voice, but decided not to push.

“Why don’t we go see what Cam and Tracy have got up to and then get some lunch,” Daniel said.

Joey followed Daniel out of the barn and through the yard. They found Cameron sitting on the blanket with Tracy across from him. He was wearing his baseball mitt and rolling the baseball towards Tracy who then pushed it back into Cam’s open glove less than a foot away.

“Hey guys,” Cam greeted them. He smiled at the reassuring look on Daniel’s face. “You know, we’re gonna have to get this gal a baseball mitt of her own.”

Daniel smiled fondly at his lover while shaking his head. He kneeled down on the blanket with Joey to play with Tracy for a few minutes before going in for lunch.
