What ever happened to hour long shows (with commercials) being an hour long?

What is up with an hour show being an hour and five minutes one week and an hour and two minutes the next?

What if there is a show that starts the next hour on another channel, but the previous show doesn't end until five minutes into the next hour?

I've been pretty lucky so far, but I find this rather annoying. There's also the fact that it seems about every ten years the commercials get longer and the actual show gets shorter. Eventually we'll have forty-three minutes of commercials and seventeen minutes of show. That's really bad when the show is in its allotted one hour and doesn't go beyond it. Of course some of the shows that are after the shows that go over an hour are shorter than the hour.

Grey's Anatomy was an hour and seven minutes last night and then the show after that on the same channel was fifty-three minutes. I can't really say if Grey's Anatomy had more or less commercials and I don't know if the other show was really short changed though.

TV has gotten really screwy. Sigh.
