Title: A Trip Through Another Galaxy
Author: sg_lab
Rating: PG
Summary: The first day of school is coming up and Daniel’s leaving for a trip to Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: Daniel/Cam, Jack/Sam implied, team
Disclaimer: Not mine
Series: Family Ties
A/N: I don’t think Col. Reynolds has ever been given a first name so Dan is my creation. I know it’s just a shortening of Daniel but I think life we sometimes meet others with the same name as ours or more than one person with the same name
The first couple of days went fairly smoothly for Cameron and the kids. Then on Wednesday Joey came home with math homework he needed help with. Cameron sat with the teen for an hour trying to help him while Tracy came in more than once asking him to play with her.
“I got A’s in math all through school,” Cameron grumbled. “I took AP math. I know math.”
“It’s okay Cam,” Joey told him. “I’ll figure something out,” he got up and left the dinner table to go to his room.
“Cameron I wanna play outside,” Tracy said.
Cameron checked the clock. He had a half an hour before he’d start dinner. “Come on,” he said. “Let’s take Sam out with us.”
Fifteen minutes into playing with Tracy in the backyard, Cam heard a car pull up in the driveway. Looking around the corner of the house he was surprised to see Jack climbing out of the car.
“Uncle Jack,” Tracy squealed having followed Cameron. The five year old ran up to Jack putting up her arms.
Jack obliged and picked her up in his arms. “Hey squirt,” he tweaked her nose getting another squeal of delight out of her.
“Jack, what brings you here?” Cam asked. A little knot pulled in his stomach. He always imagined it would be Jack who would be showing up at his house if something had happened to Daniel off world.
And that just added to the slightest bit of irrational jealousy he felt towards the man sometimes. Not that he didn’t like Jack, but he was the leader of SG-1 first. Not to mention the fact that he and Daniel shared a bond that went all the way back to that first trip to Abydos.
“I’ve been summoned for math tutoring,” he said.
Cameron grimaced. “You’ve had experience in this?”
“Yeah, taught my kid Charlie long division and helped Cassie occasionally when she was a teenager,” Jack had become more open to talking about his lost son. Since he and Sam had had their twins Jack wanted them to know about their big brother.
“Maybe you can give me some pointers on how to teach math,” Cam laughed leading the way into the house.

The following Monday was Labor Day so they had a three day weekend. Cam and the rest of the team had the day off on Monday as well.
The previous Friday when Cam was at work, the SGC had dialed Atlantis and Cam received a message from Daniel through a data burst. Daniel had sent a message to Cam and one to the kids. Cam printed out both letters at work and gave the kids’ their letter that night. The entire weekend Tracy carried around the letter repeatedly asking Joey or Cam or anyone within hearing to read it to her again.
Cam didn’t tell the others that he kept his note from Daniel in a lock box at home in their bedroom closet. Daniel had only been slightly more explicit about where he actually was compared to his letter to the kids, but Cam felt it was best to keep it secure.
Cam lay in bed Friday night reading the letter. He laughed about Daniel’s complaining of McKay. The scientist could try the patience of a saint and Daniel’s patience could border on saintly.
Cam could imagine Daniel’s amused smile as he told Cameron in his letter he had no worries about Daniel falling for another flyboy in Atlantis. Apparently they were all taken. By whom Daniel would not tell.
As he read the letter he had a brief fear Daniel would rather stay in Atlantis. But by the end of the letter Daniel had let him know he missed them and couldn’t wait to see them.
Cameron just had to hold on for two more weeks. So far things had gone smoothly-except for that math snafu. He really needed to learn how to teach math.

Date: 2009-08-13 05:15 am (UTC)The math thing I wrote in because I've had the experience Joey had as a kid. My dad is great at math but terrible at teaching it. I remember him trying to teach me long division. It did not go over so well. :D
It was going to be Sam but then I decided to go for the not so obvious choice of Jack. I can see him being patient with a kid helping him with math.
Thanks for your comments. Glad you enjoyed.
