“Jackson.”

Daniel’s head shot up in surprise. He did his best to remain calm and look unfazed. He hadn’t expected Mitchell to appear in his office. “Colonel.”

Taking a breath Daniel stepped forward shaking the other man’s hand.

“My friends call me Cameron.”

Daniel felt his stomach twist a little but still refused to show any emotion. “Daniel. Uh, how are you?”

“I’m good, thanks.”

“Uh, yeah. I heard you were coming.” Daniel continued with his packing.

“Yeah, they told me you were leaving.”

Daniel forced out a smile. “Yes. Finally. You don't, uh…” he gestured at the packing. “…you don't want to help?”

“No, actually, I came to see if I could talk you into staying.”

“You’re kidding.” Daniel couldn’t figure out what Mitchell was doing trying to keep him on the team when he hadn’t even heard from him in months. Still he managed to keep his voice neutral.

“I’ve been given command of SG-1.”

“Wow,” Daniel responded even though he actually knew. “Well. Well, good for you. You…uh…you deserve it.”

“I think the SGC still needs you.”

Daniel could feel Mitchell pushing harder, but he just couldn’t give in, not now.

“Whoa, there’s lots of other guys,” Daniel said.
“You're the world's foremost expert on the Ancients,” Mitchell said.

Daniel grinned. “Yes. And that's why I'm going to Atlantis: ‘City of the Ancients.’”

“Listen. General O'Neill gave me the choice of any posting I wanted. I chose SG-1. That meant Colonel Carter, Teal'c, and yourself. Not two letters, a dash, and a number.”

Daniel continued to pack although he could hear the aggravation rising in Mitchell’s voice. “Uhh, that's nice…”

“I wanted to be on the front line, working with the best. I wanted to learn from you.”

Daniel’s face scrunched. “Look, this is all very flattering, but uh…”

“That's not the point.”

Daniel stopped packing and looked at Mitchell. “I'm sorry. I mean I know I owe you one; we all do.”

For a brief moment Mitchell looked like he was somewhere else and then it was gone. His focus turned back quickly to Daniel.

“Listen, Jackson…I don't want you to stay because you think you owe me one. Unless, of course, you're considering it.”

Daniel shook his head. “Oh, no no.

“I was just going to offer you my apartment,” Daniel pulled out his key from his pocket. When Mitchell didn’t take them immediately, Daniel shrugged and dropped the key on the table retreating from the room. He was just not ready for this confrontation.

Daniel spent the next few hours trying to avoid Mitchell only to be forced in his presence again when he heard Vala Mal Doran had inexplicably arrived at the SGC. He wondered if his day could get any worse.

And then it did.

Daniel’s eyes scrunched open and landed on Teal’c sitting next to him. “Teal’c?”

He then realized he was in the infirmary. Mitchell suddenly appeared much to Daniel’s irritation. But as this day had already been going to hell it inevitably got worse. He was quite literally stuck to Vala. And he missed his ride on the Daedalus.

Yep, someone somewhere must really hate him.

“All right, excuse me, kids. Marks, what do you got?”

Daniel felt Mitchell pushing his way between him and Vala. They were on the Prometheus in orbit over Earth soon to be transported by Asgard beams into a mountain in Britain.

Once inside the mountain Daniel was almost relieved they split up and he was paired up with Vala.

And then the ceiling started to cave in on them.
