Summary: Sheppard’s family is dealt a heavy blow.
“No!” The shout reverberated against the infirmary walls and startled him for a second. “You are not telling us this. She is not dead.”
“Dr. McKay,” He could hear Dr. Keller’s voice trying to placate.
“Rodney,” Teyla’s usual serene voice was shaking.
The voices became some what jumbled and he was feeling suffocated. He turned and ran into Ronon. He saw the hint of empathy in the Satedan’s eyes and looked away as he continued out the door.
John didn’t know where he was going, but he knew he had to get away. He walked for several minutes not thinking of anything until he came upon a room. It was familiar, but he couldn’t place it. All the rooms looked the same really, so why was this one so familiar?
His eyes caught sight of the stasis chamber. It was the room in which they had found the ten thousand year old Weir over two years ago.
He kicked the chamber. What if they had put her in stasis until she could have been saved?
“It wouldn’t have worked.”
John spun around finding Rodney standing in the doorway. “What did you say?”
“Putting Elizabeth in this stasis chamber wouldn’t have worked,” Rodney stepped further into the room until he was standing next to John.
“Why?” John asked sliding to the floor.
“It was programmed for one person and that was old Weir,” Rodney was silent for a moment and sat down next to John. “Actually, I don’t know why it wouldn’t work for Elizabeth.”
They sat in silence for several minutes until John heard a sniff. He turned to look at his friend and saw tears sliding down Rodney’s face. He looked away and squeezed his eyes shut. His own tears would not come.
He felt that icy claw around his heart return that had pried loose finger by cold finger as he had found a family here on Atlantis. Every now and then the icy hand would come close, but somehow he would manage to keep it at bay.
He had been struggling more in recent months to keep it away since Carson’s death, but now with Elizabeth’s death it had gained a foothold.
He heard a quiet sob next to him and gave himself an internal shake. He looked at his friend again. Rodney’s head was down buried in his hands. His shoulders were hunched over and shaking.
Maybe he couldn’t cry or let out his own feelings, but he couldn’t just sit by while a member of his family was hurting. Feeling only a moment of doubt and awkwardness he pushed it aside and wrapped an arm around Rodney’s shoulders. His other arm reached across the front of Rodney until he was holding onto his friend. He rested the side of his head on the top of Rodney’s.
John’s eyes had closed as he sat holding onto his friend. He didn’t know how long they had been sitting there. The tremors in Rodney’s body had calmed and he was slumped a bit in John’s arms.
John felt a hand on his shoulder, but didn’t react other than to open his eyes. Teyla was kneeling down next to him. She gave him a sad smile and sat down next to him. He looked over seeing movement and saw Ronon sitting next to Rodney placing a hand on the scientist’s back.
The teammates stayed together holding onto each other until they would have to face a new day with one less member of their family.

Date: 2007-04-12 06:04 pm (UTC)I tried writing where Rodney was being supportive, but the guy was just wearing his heart on his sleeve. John was being his usual closed off self. ;)
I love Rodney and Elizabeth friendship, but I couldn't possibly ship them. They're like brother and sister to me.

Date: 2007-04-12 06:47 pm (UTC)As their relationship is now I can't write them as together. I felt like because Rodney has known Elizabeth longer his reaction would be more open.

Thanks for the review. :)
