Chapter 2

By the time Evan had returned to Rodney with Dr. Keller, the scientist had fallen asleep. Elizabeth and the rest of Rodney’s team were contacted. Dr. Keller didn’t have much she could tell them. It was possible Rodney’s apparent partial amnesia would only be temporary. Only time would tell.

Evan had returned to his quarters in an attempt to get some sleep. It became futile and the rest of the night had him tossing and turning.

He grabbed the picture of him and Rodney sitting on his night stand. It had been taken while he and Rodney were visiting Rodney’s sister and family. It was a candid shot of Evan and Rodney while they were in the back yard of the Miller house. Rodney had fallen asleep on one of the patio chairs and Evan couldn’t resist dropping a kiss on his lover’s lips when he thought they were alone. A flash of light let him know they weren’t.

Now every time Rodney stayed in Evan’s room he would give the picture a look of irritation grumbling about his sister.

Evan sighed and shook his head feeling ridiculously sentimental. He put the picture down and tried to find sleep.

The next morning Evan was exhausted, but he was determined to see Rodney. Maybe things would be better today. Maybe he was just confused upon just waking up. He’d been through a lot for the last week. Evan shivered every time he thought about how long Kolya had his hands on Rodney.

Entering the infirmary he heard Colonel Sheppard’s voice. He walked around the curtain separating Rodney from the rest of the room.

“I’m sorry you have to hear this now,” Sheppard was sitting next to Rodney, his hand on his friend’s shoulder.

Rodney looked over at John and Evan winced at the look in his lover’s eyes. “I think I need some more sleep,” Rodney said.

“Are you sure you’re gonna be okay?” John asked.

“I’m just tired, Colonel,” Rodney said.

“All right, I’ll leave you to rest,” John got up.

Evan met Sheppard on the other side of the curtain. Sheppard gestured for him to walk with him. Evan followed.

“Rodney was asking about Carson,” Sheppard grimaced. “I told him what happened.”

“Damn,” Lorne groaned. “Couldn’t you have waited for me?”

“He wasn’t going to be put off. The fact is he’s been asking about Carson for the last couple of hours. Keller finally called me in.”

“She should have called me,” Lorne all but snapped.

“Rodney is dealing with a lot right now. I just had to tell him one of his best friends is dead,” John was trying to keep his own voice down.

Evan rubbed his eyes. “What else have you told him?”

“He knows he’s missing almost two years. His most recent memories are of Ronon’s first mission with us.”

“He and I were just barely acquainted at that point,” Evan said.

Evan had gone back into the infirmary after finishing his conversation with Sheppard. He came around the curtain and sat down next to the sleeping man. Reaching out he held Rodney’s hand in his.

Before Rodney could wake up, Evan slipped out. He had to think about what he was going to tell Rodney. He figured he should probably talk with Keller or even Heightmeyer.

A couple of days later Rodney was released from the infirmary. Evan stayed away while Sheppard walked Rodney back to his quarters. He didn’t know how to talk to Rodney now. Heightmeyer told him he should tell Rodney the truth, but not to push him too much or overwhelm him anymore than he had been.

Evan decided to go get some dinner. Entering the mess it had only a few people scattered around. After finding a table alone he looked up to see Rodney entering the mess with Sheppard and Weir beside him. Ronon and Teyla were coming up from behind.

He looked back down to his own food concentrating on eating.

“Major,” Evan almost choked on his food. He looked up at Rodney standing across from him.

“Rodney, glad to see you’re out of the infirmary,” Evan held back the wince as his eyes swept over the still obvious damage Kolya had caused his lover. Rodney’s left arm was in a sling and there was a good sized bruise on his cheek.

“Major, when I returned to my quarters I found a picture of you and me on my nightstand. Are we friends? Or something?”

‘Or something,’ Evan wanted to say. “We’re…”

“Hey guys,” Sheppard interrupted. “Mind if we sit here?”

“Not at all,” Lorne said. The rest of the dinner was an odd affair. Evan glanced at Rodney every now and then catching him glance his way as well.

It was early when his door chimed. “Rodney?” Evan blurted out when the door opened.

Rodney looked at him uncertain. He looked to his left and right before looking over his shoulder behind him. At last he settled back on looking at Evan.

“Major, I need to know. Are we in a relationship?”

Evan gulped and took a deep breath before waving Rodney inside. He gestured Rodney over to a chair. “Yes,” he said at last. “How…?”

“This,” Rodney handed Evan a photo album. The Major flipped through it recognizing several of the pictures. Scattered throughout there were pictures of him and Rodney. Some of them had them looking like just like two good friends. Others were less guarded showing them looking at each other in a way that couldn’t be mistaken as anything but two people in love.

The last picture of them was the most obvious and it was a moment neither thought would end up on film. Evan’s sister took the picture of them holding each other as they had just parted their lips from a kiss.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Rodney asked.

Evan tried to think of why he had been avoiding this conversation. He wanted to say he didn’t want to overwhelm Rodney, but that wasn’t it really true. At least not the complete truth. “I was afraid you wouldn’t remember.”

“You’ll need to jog my memory,” Rodney said.

“How do I do that?” Evan asked.

“I want to get to know you again,” Rodney said. “What was our first date?”

Evan smirked. “It wasn’t exactly an official date, but we kinda ran into each other in the mess late one evening. The place was deserted so we raided the kitchen.”

Rodney nodded. “Interested in raiding the kitchen tonight?”

Evan’s smirk turned into a smile.

*flails slightly* *flails a lot*

Awwwww! This was really sad and sweet and really well written angst.
I loved the bit about Carson. And the bit with Lorne getting sentimental over the photo at the beginning made me really sappy.

I can't wait for more of this. You are making get even more into this pairing than I was before :)

Awww, thanks. This was a tricky chapter for me. I kept writing parts and deleting. I couldn't decide if Rodney would find out soon or if I should wait.

Oh well, next chapter: their first date. :D
