Pairings: Lorne/McKay established with implied Sheppard/Weir
Spoilers: Sunday but things go AU after that. Irresponsible never happened. In fact neither did Irresistible. Set sometime after s3.
Summary: After Rodney suffers at the hands of an old enemy he and Evan must deal with the fallout
Chapter 3
Evan checked his watch. It was just after 2300 hours. The mess had just emptied of its last person. Rodney said he would be there in a few minutes so Evan decided to go ahead to the kitchen.
His first stop was to the refrigerator. He had been looking around for a minute when he heard footsteps.
“Major, stealing food without me?”
Evan grinned and pulled his head out of the refrigerator. He grabbed two chocolate pudding cups on his way out.
“Will this be a satisfactory peace offering?” He handed Rodney one of the pudding cups.
Rodney gave an exaggerated sniff. “I suppose it’ll do for now.”
They retrieved spoons and sat at the counter.
“So, what led us to raid the kitchen that night and when was it?”
“Rodney,” Evan grabbed Rodney’s flailing hand as the scientist tried to open his pudding cup with one good arm.
“You’d think they could invent something a little easier to open. It’s like those stupid plastic packages that take the jaws of life to get into.”
Evan smirked pulling the cover off the top of the pudding cup. He had to admit this wasn’t one of the easier packages to open.
“You left a piece on the side,” Rodney groused.
Evan shook his head. “You’ll live.”
Rodney seemed to freeze at that moment. His head dipped down. “Sorry.”
That had Evan coming up short. “And what exactly are you apologizing for?”
“This is our first date. Sort of,” he shrugged looking a little helpless.
“What? You’re trying to be nice?” When Rodney nodded Evan shook his head. “Don’t try so hard. Just relax.”
“Okay,” Rodney agreed. “So are you going to answer my questions?”
Evan had to think back tracking their conversation. “Oh right. Oh about eight months ago I came back late from an offworld mission. There wasn’t anyone in the mess and I was hungry. You actually came in after me the same as now catching me in the refrigerator.”
“What was I doing?” Rodney got up and started opening cupboards.
“Working late in your lab. You were taking a break. You don’t want to eat that.” Evan grabbed the colorful spiny item from Rodney. Rodney raised an eyebrow. “It’s something we trade with some off world allies. You had a reaction to it a couple of months ago,” Rodney’s eyes looked ready to pop out of their eye sockets. “Nothing deathly,” Evan grinned.
“What?” Rodney gave him his most irritated look.
“Your skin turned an interesting color,” Evan’s lips twitched remembering Rodney coming to Evan’s quarters looking rather colorful. Rodney had stripped off his clothes wanting to know if he was completely covered. After a few minutes of examining his lover Evan confirmed Rodney was completely colorful.
Rodney glowered at Evan. “How long did that last?”
“Just forty-eight hours. You spent that entire time in my quarters. I couldn’t complain about the quality time,” Evan grinned.
Rodney straightened his throat. “So we’ve been together, how long?”
“Officially six months. The first two months we were dating and didn’t realize it. At least that’s what everyone was telling us,” Evan looked around some more finding a few things he knew Rodney would like. “What made you decide you wanted to do this tonight? I didn’t think you’d be ready even if you knew we were together.”
Rodney shrugged. “I don’t know. I figured it would be one way to get my memory back. I’m amazed I’ve been in a relationship this long.”
Evan didn’t know what to say to that. He looked at the tray of food they had collected. “How about we take this and sit at one of the tables.”
They sat and ate and talked until Rodney was about to fall asleep. Evan walked Rodney to his quarters. They stood outside Rodney’s door for an awkward moment. Rodney leaned forward surprising Evan.
“You don’t have to kiss me,” Evan said.
“I want to,” Rodney said in that tone that indicated he thought the person he was speaking to was a moron.
Evan grinned meeting Rodney halfway. When their lips touched Evan felt like weeping. Every part of him wanted to grab hold of Rodney and never let go. But the saner part of him took control not wanting to overwhelm Rodney.
Evan’s right hand did find its way up to the side of Rodney’s face for a brief moment just before they parted. The kiss was light. A soft brushing of lips.
“So, I’ll see you tomorrow sometime?” Evan asked.
“Sure. Free for dinner?”
“Yeah,” Evan said.
They said a quick goodnight to each other and Evan headed back to his quarters. This was going to be a long night.
