How can a show be considered a failure if it's been on for 10 years before it's canceled?

How can a show that had managed to revive itself with a new cast, when it's main big name left, and be better than ever, get cancelled while it's now crappy sister show changes it's cast and goes completely trashy? That's what I want to know.

I'll admit the first five years of sg1 are my favorite, but I'd agree the changes to Atlantis are far worse than the changes to sg1.
