I went and saw Wild Hogs yesterday. It was an amusing piece of fluff. I might have not felt like cringing a lot of the time if I hadn’t gone to see it with the group I had. They’re a rather conservative bunch.

Cut for length and spoilers for Wild Hogs.

I had a couple of issues with the movie though. For one it really shows how there is a lot of room for improvement of how gays are portrayed in TV and movies. An over sexed gay cop comes upon the four men in the movie camping out. The four men are all sharing an air mattress and one of the men has his arm wrapped around another one snuggled up behind him. The gay cop thinks they’re all gay and thinks “cool, foursome.”

The gay jokes never seem to end. There are a number of times particularly between John Travolta and William H. Macy where they’re doing something and John Travolta usually freaks out afraid they’ll be perceived as gay.

That brings me to my second issue with the movie; the way in which straight men interact with each other in TV and movies. I wish the male characters wouldn’t be so insecure about their sexuality that they can’t have a little emotional intimacy with other men.

I have fallen in love with the show Boston Legal this season. The relationship between the characters Denny and Alan played by William Shatner and James Spader is amazing. They’re two straight men who are not afraid of telling each other they love each other. Denny once told Alan that he finds it silly that jealousy and fidelity is relegated only for romantic relationships.

The movie From Here to Eternity is one I really enjoyed. There is one scene it is well known for, but I find it to be a yawn fest. A man and a woman are on a beach making out as waves come over them. The romance is between a married woman and her husband’s subordinate. Again, *yawn*.

The truly compelling relationship for me is one between two male soldiers. The friendship is so deep and moving. When one of the men dies the other one’s grief is just palpable. He’s a bugle play and he stands in the middle of the barracks playing Taps; a single tear sliding down his face.

They really knew how to write the relationships between men in those day. The women however, not so much.

I think I’ve been reading too much meta these last few days. And some people seem to think they’re so cool because they use big fancy words discussing a television show.
