last night I watched two shows I've never watched before.
One was Men In Trees. I liked it. It is kind of like Northern Exposure as a fish out of water thing. The main character is in a little Alaskan town with interesting and colorful characters.
Supernatural was the other show. I didn't really like it that much. As I've only seen one episode I can only assume the episodes use various types of cultural myths and spiritual beliefs to take care of evil that is happening in a given episode.
This was the problem I had with Poltergeist The Legacy.
Like last night's episode Dean was attempting to cast off this demon. He had a Rosary in one hand and I assume was reading from the bible. Whatever he was reading was in Latin anyway. The problem I had was for all I knew he thought what he was reading was gibberish and the cross he held in his hand had no meaning for him. If he doesn't believe in what the cross symbolizes it's just a piece of wood. And I'm not saying I would have had a problem if he was using a ritual from another belief system. But for me the characters have to have faith and believe in what they're doing. A ritual is just saying some words and throwing water on something if the person doesn't believe in it.
And then in another scene Dean's brother is with this guy and they're standing in a ring of dirt. Uh okay. A ring of dirt is suppose to save them?

Date: 2007-03-10 01:27 am (UTC)One thing about TXF is that Mulder is at least honest about his feelings regarding faith and Scully was the one who did have a specific faith base.
Shows like SPN are just cop outs as far as I'm concerned and wishy-washy about faith.
Shows that treat the bible and cross as he did offend me as a Christian, but even if the ritual was based on another faith I would have liked to see he truly believed in it. I wouldn't have had a problem with it being another spiritual belief that isn't mine.
